The Transformative Power of Cold Plunging: Science and Personal Journeys

Sam Maxwell replaced an Adderall dependency with a plastic barrel of ice water. Gary Brecka explains the neuroscience behind why cold immersion restores what stimulants quietly erode.

Sam Maxwell turned a plastic barrel of ice water into a solution for Adderall dependency. Gary Brecka and Kyle Ponton explain the neuroscience behind why it worked — and how that discovery became a company.

Two Roads to Cold Water

Kyle's invitation arrived on a Saturday morning, pre-COVID, Atlanta winter. A friend had suggested finding a local pool and getting in before the city woke up. He arrived without vocabulary for what was about to happen — no understanding of what cold water does to the body's neurochemical landscape, no map for the dopamine and norepinephrine that flood the nervous system in response to cold, producing a state of sharpened clarity and sustained focus. He moved through the initial shock and emerged transformed. He had no framework for what had just happened, but the feeling was real enough to bring him back.

The effect arrived immediately, not after weeks of practice. He had no buzzwords for it, no science to explain it — only the experience of clarity landing clean and unmistakable, and the certainty that he wanted to return. He invited others the following week. They felt it too.

Five people became twenty. Twenty became sixty. Eventually, hundreds were arriving at the lake on Saturday mornings in Atlanta — a community that organized itself without announcement, drawn not by any formal invitation but by the pull of something that genuinely worked. People were finding cold water independently, feeling the same immediate shift in clarity and mood, and returning to repeat it.

Cold water had become a weekly ritual long before anyone had given it a name. That gathering became Kyle's proof of concept — long before he had a business plan, he had evidence that this practice addressed a need most people had not yet articulated.

Sam arrived at the same destination by a different route. He was alone at the office late one night, without his prescription, running on caffeine and the low-grade frustration of someone whose current arrangement has stopped working. He opened a search engine and typed with honest intent: what can help with an Adderall addiction? He was not following a trend. He was looking for a way out.

Cold therapy surfaced in the results. The evidence at the time was sparse — a handful of articles, cautiously encouraging — but it was enough. Sam sourced a plastic barrel, set it up in a corner of his office, and began hauling bags of ice each morning. The setup was unglamorous. The commitment was absolute.

When Kyle walked into that office and encountered Sam submerged in a barrel of cold water that had clearly seen better days, he recognized something past the immediate scene. Two people, two completely independent searches — one through Saturday morning community pools in Atlanta, one through a late-night browser and a plastic barrel in an office corner — had arrived at the same practice and the same conviction without any coordination between them. They had already been working together on a different venture. Kyle had recently started talking about wanting to build a cold plunge company. Sam, it turned out, was already living inside one.

That convergence ended the conversation about their other venture and began a new one. They set aside what they had been building and turned their full attention toward what had already changed them both.

And so if we're making them inside the body, when we take things inside the body, when we take things inside the body, when we take things from outside the body and put them in in from outside the body and put them in in from outside the body and put them in in an effort to try to fix that deficiency, an effort to try to fix that deficiency, an effort to try to fix that deficiency, it never works, right? Yeah. thing. Yeah. thing. Yeah. >> What are the top three reasons why I >> What are the top three reasons why I >> What are the top three reasons why I prefer a vertical cold plunge versus a prefer a vertical cold plunge versus a prefer a vertical cold plunge versus a layown tub? Well, I've used both. When layown tub? Well, I've used both. When layown tub? Well, I've used both. When you're in a vertical position, your body you're in a vertical position, your body you're in a vertical position, your body naturally regulates your breathing naturally regulates your breathing naturally regulates your breathing better. So, if you're holding on to the better. So, if you're holding on to the better. So, if you're holding on to the sides and you're in a vertical position, sides and you're in a vertical position, sides and you're in a vertical position, you can just focus on your breath work you can just focus on your breath work you can just focus on your breath work and you can stay calm. A lot of people and you can stay calm. A lot of people and you can stay calm. A lot of people feel more calm when they're in a feel more calm when they're in a feel more calm when they're in a vertical position than when they're vertical position than when they're vertical position than when they're laying down in the water and think they laying down in the water and think they laying down in the water and think they might slip under the water. So, when might slip under the water. So, when might slip under the water. So, when you're vertical plunging, you're fully you're vertical plunging, you're fully you're vertical plunging, you're fully immersed faster. You can focus on immersed faster. You can focus on immersed faster. You can focus on recovery, inflammation reduction, and recovery, inflammation reduction, and recovery, inflammation reduction, and you're not struggling to just stay in a you're not struggling to just stay in a you're not struggling to just stay in a lie down position. Um, you know, cold plunging was definitely a tipping point plunging was definitely a tipping point plunging was definitely a tipping point u for me, but now that I'm out there and u for me, but now that I'm out there and u for me, but now that I'm out there and and looking at the research and of and looking at the research and of and looking at the research and of course you can't, you know, you're on course you can't, you know, you're on course you can't, you know, you're on Instagram, the stuff comes into my feed, Instagram, the stuff comes into my feed, Instagram, the stuff comes into my feed, you see the people are all over the you see the people are all over the you see the people are all over the place on on on cold plunging. I think place on on on cold plunging. I think place on on on cold plunging. I think the hardcore cold plungers like like the hardcore cold plungers like like the hardcore cold plungers like like myself um try not to go a day without myself um try not to go a day without myself um try not to go a day without it. I mean, in Colorado, I got $165 uh it. I mean, in Colorado, I got $165 uh it. I mean, in Colorado, I got $165 uh cattle trough that I jump in because I cattle trough that I jump in because I cattle trough that I jump in because I can't I don't have electricity, right? can't I don't have electricity, right? can't I don't have electricity, right? Literally. So I was told I can't run a I Literally. So I was told I can't run a I Literally. So I was told I can't run a I can't run a chiller. So I I just uh I can't run a chiller. So I I just uh I can't run a chiller. So I I just uh I bought a $165 aluminum cattle trough. bought a $165 aluminum cattle trough. bought a $165 aluminum cattle trough. The water comes out of the glacier at The water comes out of the glacier at The water comes out of the glacier at like 42 degrees and I jump in and I like 42 degrees and I jump in and I like 42 degrees and I jump in and I don't let it get moldy like yours. I don't let it get moldy like yours. I don't let it get moldy like yours. I just change change it every day. just change change it every day. just change change it every day. >> But I guess it's not I wasn't in my >> But I guess it's not I wasn't in my >> But I guess it's not I wasn't in my office, you know. office, you know. office, you know. >> Extremely healthy then. >> Extremely healthy then. >> Extremely healthy then. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You you hadn't taken my my mold >> Yeah. You you hadn't taken my my mold >> Yeah. You you hadn't taken my my mold detox class yet? detox class yet? detox class yet? >> Not yet. >> Not yet. >> Not yet. >> Yeah, you can sign up for that >> Yeah, you can sign up for that >> Yeah, you can sign up for that challenge. Um so um you know but one of challenge. Um so um you know but one of challenge. Um so um you know but one of one of the uh articles I read lately one of the uh articles I read lately one of the uh articles I read lately studies um was that cold plunging

18:00

studies um was that cold plunging studies um was that cold plunging actually reduces the um benefits of of actually reduces the um benefits of of actually reduces the um benefits of of exercise. And I think that this threw a exercise. And I think that this threw a exercise. And I think that this threw a little no pun intended but cold water on little no pun intended but cold water on little no pun intended but cold water on the cold plunging space and maybe the cold plunging space and maybe the cold plunging space and maybe clarify that or um talk about that a clarify that or um talk about that a clarify that or um talk about that a little bit you know timing or or little bit you know timing or or little bit you know timing or or whatnot. whatnot. whatnot. >> I I can share some stuff on that. So >> I I can share some stuff on that. So >> I I can share some stuff on that. So there there was a recent study that came there there was a recent study that came there there was a recent study that came out and I think it kind of scared people out and I think it kind of scared people out and I think it kind of scared people a little bit thinking like oh no cold a little bit thinking like oh no cold a little bit thinking like oh no cold plunging is bad and and it's really kind plunging is bad and and it's really kind plunging is bad and and it's really kind of like anything it's a very nuanced of like anything it's a very nuanced of like anything it's a very nuanced discussion. It's not uh general, it's discussion. It's not uh general, it's discussion. It's not uh general, it's very nuanced. And so um when they talk very nuanced. And so um when they talk very nuanced. And so um when they talk about inflammation uh being bad after a about inflammation uh being bad after a about inflammation uh being bad after a workout, they're talking about the workout, they're talking about the workout, they're talking about the concept of when you're working out after concept of when you're working out after concept of when you're working out after a heavy lift, a heavy lift, a heavy lift, >> right? In a heavy in a in a gym exercise >> right? In a heavy in a in a gym exercise >> right? In a heavy in a in a gym exercise where you're actually inflaming the where you're actually inflaming the where you're actually inflaming the muscles and that's the intention of muscles and that's the intention of muscles and that's the intention of >> the exercise. Then uh immediately >> the exercise. Then uh immediately >> the exercise. Then uh immediately following the exercise, you probably following the exercise, you probably following the exercise, you probably don't want to now deflame the muscle. don't want to now deflame the muscle. don't want to now deflame the muscle. >> I would agree with that. >> I would agree with that. >> I would agree with that. >> Now you might know more about this. I'm >> Now you might know more about this. I'm >> Now you might know more about this. I'm sure there is a time period and that's I sure there is a time period and that's I sure there is a time period and that's I think where the nuance comes in. Is it think where the nuance comes in. Is it think where the nuance comes in. Is it an hour? Is it four hours? Is it 3

19:00

an hour? Is it four hours? Is it 3 an hour? Is it four hours? Is it 3 hours? I think that's where the kind of hours? I think that's where the kind of hours? I think that's where the kind of the conversation comes in. I think the conversation comes in. I think the conversation comes in. I think safely just for everyone's purposes, if safely just for everyone's purposes, if safely just for everyone's purposes, if you wait a couple hours and just use you wait a couple hours and just use you wait a couple hours and just use logic and then you go hop in the coal logic and then you go hop in the coal logic and then you go hop in the coal punch for recovery, you're going to be punch for recovery, you're going to be punch for recovery, you're going to be okay. or if you do it prior to exercise okay. or if you do it prior to exercise okay. or if you do it prior to exercise or just do it prior to exercise. or just do it prior to exercise. or just do it prior to exercise. >> And I think that's where people >> And I think that's where people >> And I think that's where people misunderstood. It makes it seems like misunderstood. It makes it seems like misunderstood. It makes it seems like common sense. Right after the workout, common sense. Right after the workout, common sense. Right after the workout, we're going to get in the cold punch for we're going to get in the cold punch for we're going to get in the cold punch for recovery, recovery, recovery, >> which like you just said though, now I >> which like you just said though, now I >> which like you just said though, now I cold punch before I work out. cold punch before I work out. cold punch before I work out. >> I do too. >> I do too. >> I do too. >> I don't have to take preworkout or >> I don't have to take preworkout or >> I don't have to take preworkout or caffeine or nothing. That's that's caffeine or nothing. That's that's caffeine or nothing. That's that's that's it right there for me. And then that's it right there for me. And then that's it right there for me. And then additionally, if I want to do it again, additionally, if I want to do it again, additionally, if I want to do it again, I just wait until later in the day. I just wait until later in the day. I just wait until later in the day. >> Yeah. And you know, I I've actually used >> Yeah. And you know, I I've actually used >> Yeah. And you know, I I've actually used it as a um uh contrast therapy it as a um uh contrast therapy it as a um uh contrast therapy sometimes, even before I go to bed. Now, sometimes, even before I go to bed. Now, sometimes, even before I go to bed. Now, I won't get in for a long time, but I'll I won't get in for a long time, but I'll I won't get in for a long time, but I'll do a short sauna session that I'll just do a short sauna session that I'll just do a short sauna session that I'll just go in the cold punch for about 30 go in the cold punch for about 30 go in the cold punch for about 30 seconds, seconds, seconds, >> quick, >> quick, >> quick, >> dunk, come up to my neck, hang out for >> dunk, come up to my neck, hang out for >> dunk, come up to my neck, hang out for about 30 seconds, and then get out. So, about 30 seconds, and then get out. So, about 30 seconds, and then get out. So, it doesn't actually it doesn't actually it doesn't actually >> give me that massive spike of, you know, >> give me that massive spike of, you know, >> give me that massive spike of, you know, norepinephrine, dopamine. Um, and I find norepinephrine, dopamine. Um, and I find norepinephrine, dopamine. Um, and I find that I sleep really, really well on on that I sleep really, really well on on that I sleep really, really well on on on those nights. But let's go into the

20:00

on those nights. But let's go into the on those nights. But let's go into the science a little bit of cold plunging. I science a little bit of cold plunging. I science a little bit of cold plunging. I mean we we know that there are stresses mean we we know that there are stresses mean we we know that there are stresses you can apply to the body called you can apply to the body called you can apply to the body called hormesis or hermetic stresses. These are hormesis or hermetic stresses. These are hormesis or hermetic stresses. These are stresses that we apply to the body and stresses that we apply to the body and stresses that we apply to the body and the body strengthens in response. the body strengthens in response. the body strengthens in response. >> I I often say we were talking about it >> I I often say we were talking about it >> I I often say we were talking about it before the podcast that you know aging before the podcast that you know aging before the podcast that you know aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort. is the aggressive pursuit of comfort. is the aggressive pursuit of comfort. >> And most people >> And most people >> And most people seek comfort very aggressively and they seek comfort very aggressively and they seek comfort very aggressively and they avoid any level of discomfort not avoid any level of discomfort not avoid any level of discomfort not realizing that some level of discomfort realizing that some level of discomfort realizing that some level of discomfort can make you stronger. Yeah. Um, so talk can make you stronger. Yeah. Um, so talk can make you stronger. Yeah. Um, so talk a little bit about direct a little bit about direct a little bit about direct evidence-backed benefits that come from evidence-backed benefits that come from evidence-backed benefits that come from coal plunging. coal plunging. coal plunging. >> Yeah, absolutely. I actually, >> Yeah, absolutely. I actually, >> Yeah, absolutely. I actually, interesting enough, so my wife, who interesting enough, so my wife, who interesting enough, so my wife, who you've met, Kayla, um, when I was doing you've met, Kayla, um, when I was doing you've met, Kayla, um, when I was doing this whole coal pledge thing, she she this whole coal pledge thing, she she this whole coal pledge thing, she she never u got into to coal plunging. Um, I never u got into to coal plunging. Um, I never u got into to coal plunging. Um, I kind of kind of kind of >> neither mine took a solid two years, >> neither mine took a solid two years, >> neither mine took a solid two years, man. man. man. >> Right. Was slow getting >> Right. Was slow getting >> Right. Was slow getting >> right on right on that timeline. That's >> right on right on that timeline. That's >> right on right on that timeline. That's about right. So, hey guys, let me tell about right. So, hey guys, let me tell about right. So, hey guys, let me tell you about one of my favorite new

21:00

you about one of my favorite new you about one of my favorite new hydration drinks. Now, this is for hydration drinks. Now, this is for hydration drinks. Now, this is for distance athletes, hits cardio distance athletes, hits cardio distance athletes, hits cardio exercisers, people that sweat a lot or exercisers, people that sweat a lot or exercisers, people that sweat a lot or exercise intensely. And a game is a exercise intensely. And a game is a exercise intensely. And a game is a hydration drink. It has eight essential hydration drink. It has eight essential hydration drink. It has eight essential vitamins. It has all of the vitamins. It has all of the vitamins. It has all of the electrolytes, the entire suite of B electrolytes, the entire suite of B electrolytes, the entire suite of B vitamins. Before you freak out and read vitamins. Before you freak out and read vitamins. Before you freak out and read that it has 21 grams of sugar, which it that it has 21 grams of sugar, which it that it has 21 grams of sugar, which it does, the sugar is coming from natural does, the sugar is coming from natural does, the sugar is coming from natural cane sugar and honey, my preferred cane sugar and honey, my preferred cane sugar and honey, my preferred mechanisms for getting glucose into the mechanisms for getting glucose into the mechanisms for getting glucose into the blood during intense exercise. It also blood during intense exercise. It also blood during intense exercise. It also has natural flavors, but these natural has natural flavors, but these natural has natural flavors, but these natural flavors don't come from bacterial flavors don't come from bacterial flavors don't come from bacterial fermentation. They actually come from fermentation. They actually come from fermentation. They actually come from real citrus fruits and the color is from real citrus fruits and the color is from real citrus fruits and the color is from vegetable juice, not artificial dyes. vegetable juice, not artificial dyes. vegetable juice, not artificial dyes. So, next time you're looking for a great So, next time you're looking for a great So, next time you're looking for a great hydration drink and you're exercising hydration drink and you're exercising hydration drink and you're exercising intensely, a game is your choice. intensely, a game is your choice. intensely, a game is your choice. >> Now, let's get back to the Ultimate >> Now, let's get back to the Ultimate Human podcast, Human podcast, Human podcast, >> you know, and for me, you know, it was >> you know, and for me, you know, it was >> you know, and for me, you know, it was more like a hurrah, you know, get in more like a hurrah, you know, get in more like a hurrah, you know, get in there hard thing to do, you know, that there hard thing to do, you know, that there hard thing to do, you know, that kind of thing. And so, that's why, you kind of thing. And so, that's why, you kind of thing. And so, that's why, you know, she'd see me do that and she's know, she'd see me do that and she's know, she'd see me do that and she's like, I'm not doing that. I don't need like, I'm not doing that. I don't need like, I'm not doing that. I don't need any of that stuff. So, uh, until, you any of that stuff. So, uh, until, you any of that stuff. So, uh, until, you know, about a year ago, she u ended up know, about a year ago, she u ended up know, about a year ago, she u ended up getting like a health coach. And one of getting like a health coach. And one of getting like a health coach. And one of the things that um she particularly ch

22:00

the things that um she particularly ch the things that um she particularly ch was was was challenged with was she had was was was challenged with was she had was was was challenged with was she had high cortisol. high cortisol. high cortisol. >> Um and she tended to um maybe just say >> Um and she tended to um maybe just say >> Um and she tended to um maybe just say mismanage stress in that sense, right? mismanage stress in that sense, right? mismanage stress in that sense, right? And so because of the high cortisol, And so because of the high cortisol, And so because of the high cortisol, because of the high stress when more because of the high stress when more because of the high stress when more stress would come on situations, it'd be stress would come on situations, it'd be stress would come on situations, it'd be very high stressful and she'd have a very high stressful and she'd have a very high stressful and she'd have a hard time managing that. And so one of hard time managing that. And so one of hard time managing that. And so one of the recommendations that her coach, you the recommendations that her coach, you the recommendations that her coach, you know, uh gave to her was, "Hey, have you know, uh gave to her was, "Hey, have you know, uh gave to her was, "Hey, have you considered cold plunging?" She well considered cold plunging?" She well considered cold plunging?" She well funny enough, you know, funny enough, you know, funny enough, you know, >> my husband >> my husband >> my husband >> I've got access to one. Um so uh she >> I've got access to one. Um so uh she >> I've got access to one. Um so uh she started a cold plunge regularly and uh started a cold plunge regularly and uh started a cold plunge regularly and uh there was a absolute massive change uh there was a absolute massive change uh there was a absolute massive change uh in her behavior and I think the reason in her behavior and I think the reason in her behavior and I think the reason why which which I've actually come to why which which I've actually come to why which which I've actually come to learn a lot more about this even just learn a lot more about this even just learn a lot more about this even just being in this space is being in this space is being in this space is >> yes it's one of those hard things to do >> yes it's one of those hard things to do >> yes it's one of those hard things to do which is probably one of my favorite which is probably one of my favorite which is probably one of my favorite benefits from it. People talk about the benefits from it. People talk about the benefits from it. People talk about the science and the benefits and the mental science and the benefits and the mental science and the benefits and the mental and and the inflammation and all those and and the inflammation and all those and and the inflammation and all those things which are great things but for me things which are great things but for me things which are great things but for me it's very difficult to do and I do it it's very difficult to do and I do it it's very difficult to do and I do it every single morning. And so doing that every single morning. And so doing that every single morning. And so doing that very hard thing in the morning is just very hard thing in the morning is just very hard thing in the morning is just there's nothing else. it sets me up for there's nothing else. it sets me up for there's nothing else. it sets me up for my day. Um, and and and that doesn't get my day. Um, and and and that doesn't get my day. Um, and and and that doesn't get talked about enough because there's talked about enough because there's talked about enough because there's there's there's there's really something

23:00

there's there's there's really something there's there's there's really something to be said about doing difficult things, to be said about doing difficult things, to be said about doing difficult things, like you said, kind of pursuing the like you said, kind of pursuing the like you said, kind of pursuing the discomfort, um, to where then when stuff discomfort, um, to where then when stuff discomfort, um, to where then when stuff comes at you, you just feel like you got comes at you, you just feel like you got comes at you, you just feel like you got it. it. it. >> Yeah. Doing them early, doing the >> Yeah. Doing them early, doing the >> Yeah. Doing them early, doing the difficult things early. Difficult. The difficult things early. Difficult. The difficult things early. Difficult. The morning is hard, your day will be easy. morning is hard, your day will be easy. morning is hard, your day will be easy. >> Exactly. And so, um, to go deeper into >> Exactly. And so, um, to go deeper into >> Exactly. And so, um, to go deeper into that though, but one of the things that that though, but one of the things that that though, but one of the things that I found very interesting was, and I I found very interesting was, and I I found very interesting was, and I didn't really learn about this really didn't really learn about this really didn't really learn about this really until this past year or two is, you until this past year or two is, you until this past year or two is, you know, when you go into a cold plunge, know, when you go into a cold plunge, know, when you go into a cold plunge, everyone talks about it. I think even everyone talks about it. I think even everyone talks about it. I think even one of your listeners, uh, might have one of your listeners, uh, might have one of your listeners, uh, might have asked a question about this. Um, you asked a question about this. Um, you asked a question about this. Um, you know, hey, it's it's so hard to get past know, hey, it's it's so hard to get past know, hey, it's it's so hard to get past that first 30, 60 seconds, that shock. I that first 30, 60 seconds, that shock. I that first 30, 60 seconds, that shock. I want to get out. I want to get out. And want to get out. I want to get out. And want to get out. I want to get out. And we experience this. You know, we see a we experience this. You know, we see a we experience this. You know, we see a lot of first-time cold plungers come in lot of first-time cold plungers come in lot of first-time cold plungers come in and they want to just get jump in and and they want to just get jump in and and they want to just get jump in and jump out. And when you jump into a cold jump out. And when you jump into a cold jump out. And when you jump into a cold punch, as you know, you, you know, you punch, as you know, you, you know, you punch, as you know, you, you know, you go into a fight or-flight response go into a fight or-flight response go into a fight or-flight response state. You go into that sympathetic state. You go into that sympathetic state. You go into that sympathetic state where you forget to breathe and state where you forget to breathe and state where you forget to breathe and you're pretty much, you know, your body you're pretty much, you know, your body you're pretty much, you know, your body is thinking, "Okay, I need to kick in is thinking, "Okay, I need to kick in is thinking, "Okay, I need to kick in because I'm going to die." Right? Your because I'm going to die." Right? Your because I'm going to die." Right? Your brain knows you're just in a cold punch, brain knows you're just in a cold punch, brain knows you're just in a cold punch, but your body is is telling you but your body is is telling you but your body is is telling you something is off. something is off. something is off. >> Um, and so doing that and then we know

24:00

>> Um, and so doing that and then we know >> Um, and so doing that and then we know that if you get past that 30 seconds, 60 that if you get past that 30 seconds, 60 that if you get past that 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds marker. It's seconds, 90 seconds marker. It's seconds, 90 seconds marker. It's different for everybody. and you get on different for everybody. and you get on different for everybody. and you get on to that kind of parasympathetic state to that kind of parasympathetic state to that kind of parasympathetic state where your heart rate comes down, you where your heart rate comes down, you where your heart rate comes down, you start to find calm, you start to find start to find calm, you start to find start to find calm, you start to find peace, you start to find that balance peace, you start to find that balance peace, you start to find that balance again, again, again, >> and then all of a sudden everything's >> and then all of a sudden everything's >> and then all of a sudden everything's okay. You can actually stay in that cold okay. You can actually stay in that cold okay. You can actually stay in that cold point at that point for probably as long point at that point for probably as long point at that point for probably as long as you want really. You know, we don't as you want really. You know, we don't as you want really. You know, we don't recommend anything past a couple recommend anything past a couple recommend anything past a couple minutes, but it's a lot easier at that minutes, but it's a lot easier at that minutes, but it's a lot easier at that point. Yeah. point. Yeah. point. Yeah. >> And what I learned was that there's >> And what I learned was that there's >> And what I learned was that there's actually a lot of data behind that uh actually a lot of data behind that uh actually a lot of data behind that uh transition of going from sympathetic to transition of going from sympathetic to transition of going from sympathetic to parasympathetic and it actually training parasympathetic and it actually training parasympathetic and it actually training the nervous system um to to to combat the nervous system um to to to combat the nervous system um to to to combat and activate in in in the normal world. and activate in in in the normal world. and activate in in in the normal world. And so and so so for my wife, I've seen And so and so so for my wife, I've seen And so and so so for my wife, I've seen that transformation where you know uh that transformation where you know uh that transformation where you know uh those same situations will come up or those same situations will come up or those same situations will come up or those challenging things can come up and those challenging things can come up and those challenging things can come up and it can be very stressful but it's not it can be very stressful but it's not it can be very stressful but it's not that same level of stress or that same that same level of stress or that same that same level of stress or that same reactivity that's there because you've reactivity that's there because you've reactivity that's there because you've trained the mind. You've trained the trained the mind. You've trained the trained the mind. You've trained the nervous system that hey stress is nervous system that hey stress is nervous system that hey stress is coming. It's coming. I'm going to go coming. It's coming. I'm going to go coming. It's coming. I'm going to go through it. I know I'm going through it. through it. I know I'm going through it. through it. I know I'm going through it. Now on the back end of this I know

25:00

Now on the back end of this I know Now on the back end of this I know there's kind of a smooth sailing coming. there's kind of a smooth sailing coming. there's kind of a smooth sailing coming. And uh I think that's that's a very And uh I think that's that's a very And uh I think that's that's a very powerful thing because there's a lot of powerful thing because there's a lot of powerful thing because there's a lot of people who deal with high stress, high people who deal with high stress, high people who deal with high stress, high cortisol. So that's that's a very cortisol. So that's that's a very cortisol. So that's that's a very challenging thing. challenging thing. challenging thing. >> Totally agree with you. There's actually >> Totally agree with you. There's actually >> Totally agree with you. There's actually something fascinating well documented in something fascinating well documented in something fascinating well documented in the literature. It's called the mamalian the literature. It's called the mamalian the literature. It's called the mamalian dive reflex. Um and the mamalian dive dive reflex. Um and the mamalian dive dive reflex. Um and the mamalian dive reflex is gerine to all mammals. Um and reflex is gerine to all mammals. Um and reflex is gerine to all mammals. Um and when mammals dive, whales, dolphins, when mammals dive, whales, dolphins, when mammals dive, whales, dolphins, when they actually dive in the ocean, as when they actually dive in the ocean, as when they actually dive in the ocean, as the water temperature cools and it's the water temperature cools and it's the water temperature cools and it's passing over their face, it shifts them passing over their face, it shifts them passing over their face, it shifts them from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state. It actually reduces their heart state. It actually reduces their heart state. It actually reduces their heart rate, calms them down. So you can rate, calms them down. So you can rate, calms them down. So you can actually capture this benefit by putting actually capture this benefit by putting actually capture this benefit by putting your face in the water when you first your face in the water when you first your face in the water when you first get in. Either dunking or splashing cold get in. Either dunking or splashing cold get in. Either dunking or splashing cold water on your face will activate the water on your face will activate the water on your face will activate the mamalian dive reflex and actually make mamalian dive reflex and actually make mamalian dive reflex and actually make the cold plunge easier. Yeah. the cold plunge easier. Yeah. the cold plunge easier. Yeah. >> And that's well documented in the >> And that's well documented in the >> And that's well documented in the literature. You can look up the mamalian literature. You can look up the mamalian literature. You can look up the mamalian dive reflex. It's a it's a it's a dive reflex. It's a it's a it's a dive reflex. It's a it's a it's a well-known reflex that's germanine to well-known reflex that's germanine to well-known reflex that's germanine to all mammals. So that's essentially all mammals. So that's essentially all mammals. So that's essentially what's what's happening there. And what's what's happening there. And what's what's happening there. So I would immediately after 2 days if I couldn't immediately after 2 days if I couldn't immediately after 2 days if I couldn't get anything from from the pharmacy, I'd get anything from from the pharmacy, I'd get anything from from the pharmacy, I'd be contacting people, hey, can I can I be contacting people, hey, can I can I be contacting people, hey, can I can I get an Adderall? A Natural Reset: Cold Therapy and ADHD

Sam had been living with a severe ADHD diagnosis since childhood. By his mid-twenties, the dependency on Adderall had compounded into something his body could no longer sustain quietly. He was not sleeping for days at a stretch. He was taking multiple doses each day. His weight had dropped to 145 pounds, and he was, in his own words, largely oblivious to how severe it had become.

The people closest to him were too concerned to confront him directly. He was moving through his life with the tunnel vision that dependency produces — functional on the surface, eroding underneath — and the distance between his perception and reality had grown wide enough that those who cared about him felt frozen. Over time, the awareness came to Sam himself. Adderall was affecting who he was in ways that mattered beyond the pharmaceutical. He began looking for a natural alternative, something that could address the ADHD without requiring a medication he had grown to resent.

He tried cryotherapy first — brief, intense cold exposure known to trigger the body's own neurochemical response. The logic was sound, and for many people the results are real and meaningful. For Sam, it was not enough. The cold reached him, but not deeply enough or long enough to break the craving. The Adderall dependency persisted after each session, and the threshold he needed to cross remained just out of reach.

I literally call it my drug of choice because nothing makes me feel better for longer.

The barrel changed that equation. He committed to fourteen consecutive days without exception — ice every morning, no alternatives, no rationalizing a break. The setup was imperfect, a plastic barrel in a corner of an office. The discipline behind it was not. He did not miss a single day.

On day fourteen, he paused and looked back. The craving for Adderall was gone — not diminished, not redirected, but absent. He was twenty-five years old, and something had genuinely shifted.

Gary Brecka frames what happened in physiological terms that make the outcome legible. The body already produces dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine — the neurotransmitters that govern mood, attention, focus, and the capacity for sustained calm. Cold water immersion is a reliable trigger for that internal production. When the body generates its own dopamine through cold exposure, the result is sustained mental clarity and elevated mood, without the ceiling that external stimulants impose and without the dependency that follows. Unlike a pharmaceutical that mimics these compounds from outside, cold water asks the body to do what it was always equipped to do.

The difficulty with compounds like Adderall lies in a phenomenon called tachyphylaxis — the body's gradual desensitization to a compound it is receiving from outside rather than producing within. The system adapts, the effective dose must increase, and the window of genuine function narrows over time. Eventually the body reduces its own production because the external source has taken over. Cold water works in the opposite direction: norepinephrine rises to sharpen attention and amplify alertness; dopamine accumulates to sustain focus and mood; serotonin contributes to emotional steadiness — all generated internally, without dependency and without diminishing return.

Sam had not known any of this when he bought the barrel. He had followed a search result and a genuine need, committing to the practice with the same single-mindedness he had previously given his prescription. He was not reasoning from science. He was reasoning from desperation, which is its own form of clarity. What Gary describes is the mechanism behind what Sam experienced: cold immersion prompting the body to reclaim its own neurochemistry, re-engaging pathways that dependency had quietly dimmed.

The result was not a substitution for Adderall. It was a restoration of something the body had always known how to produce.

The Practice of Chosen Discomfort

There is a deliberate logic to beginning the day with something hard. If your morning demands something real of you, the rest of the day arrives by comparison easy. Sam and Kyle articulate this not as philosophy but as daily protocol — a chosen difficulty that precedes everything the day will ask. Cold water is the hard thing they meet first. You enter the rest of your life already having moved through resistance.

If your morning is hard, your day will be easy.

Most people organize their lives to minimize discomfort. The instinct is natural — discomfort activates the body's threat response, and the reflexive answer is avoidance. But consistent cold exposure begins to reshape that relationship. You learn to associate the initial resistance — the breath catch, the pulse spike at immersion — with what reliably follows: clarity, calm, sustained focus.

Discomfort stops reading as danger. It becomes a signal you know how to answer.

Resilience is not declared; it is trained. The body learns from repetition. What once felt threatening becomes familiar, and from that familiarity a quiet confidence grows.

Sam calls cold his drug of choice. The phrase is deliberate. Nothing else he has encountered produces the same quality of clarity for as long, with as little consequence. No crash follows. No dependency forms.

The practice delivers the same result on the thousandth session as on the first, because the mechanism is the body's own. The body does not build desensitization to its own chemistry the way it does to external compounds.

The apprehension before stepping in — that moment at the edge, when the mind offers every reason to wait — is part of the value. You do not eliminate it. You practice meeting it, and you move through it. That, in miniature, is the rehearsal for everything else.

The vertical plunge supports this practice in specific ways. Standing upright in cold water, the body regulates breathing more naturally than when lying prone. The instinct to hold the sides steadies both posture and breath, letting full attention go to the session itself. Full immersion arrives faster, and the mind settles into the work — recovery, inflammation reduction, the sharpening of focus — rather than managing the mechanics of staying in an awkward reclined position.

The smaller footprint means the practice can live wherever you do — on a balcony, in a bathroom, in a locker room. If the ritual is going to become daily, it needs to be accessible.

Cold exposure is one of those things that is going to still be mainstream 5,000 years from now.

Cold exposure as a tool for recovery and mental clarity predates every current conversation surrounding it. The physiological response — norepinephrine rising to amplify alertness, dopamine accumulating to sustain focus and mood — belongs to the body's own repertoire; it is not an outcome a product creates but an outcome a stimulus unlocks. Sam and Kyle did not discover something new. They found something ancient, proved its value on themselves, and built from conviction rather than from a trend they hoped to ride. Cold water will outlast the conversation around it, because the body's response is not cultural — it is constant, it is physiological, and it is available to anyone willing to step in.
