The Transformative Power of Cold Water Therapy: Insights from Dan Bosomworth

Dan Bosomworth burned out quietly, then built Brass Monkeys from a chest freezer and a conviction: cold, used as a deliberate daily protocol, returns you to yourself.

Dan Bosomworth built Brass Monkeys from a lockdown chest freezer and a career on the edge of burnout. His story is a case study in what cold water can unlock when you finally let it.

The Burnout Behind the Brand

Some careers don't break you suddenly. They erode you — gradually, quietly — until the person you were is somewhere just out of reach. For Dan Bosomworth, that erosion happened across years of building and running a marketing agency: intensive work, sustained pressure, and the kind of relentless output that leaves very little room for anything else to breathe. What he would later recognize as burnout arrived without announcement. At the time, it simply felt like life.

He felt exhausted and detached — present in body, absent in every way that mattered. There was no specific crisis, no single event he could point to; just a persistent flatness, a sense of operating from somewhere just behind himself. His wife noticed before he could: she told him he wasn't in the room. It irritated him; he was there, he was working, he was trying. But she could see what he had lost the clarity to see himself.

Three children arriving in three years compressed the pressure further. There was no margin between demands, no recovery built into the rhythm, no quiet that didn't already belong to someone or something else. The internal reserve you draw on to show up — for a business, for a relationship, for three small children — had slowly, invisibly drained. Replenishment wasn't part of the protocol.

It didn't feel like I had a thing that required a label. I just felt exhausted and detached.

Running your own agency carries a weight that regular employment doesn't prepare you for. Decisions stop with you. When things go wrong, the failure feels personal in a way that is difficult to separate from who you are. The boundary between the company's health and your own erodes by degrees, so gradually you can't identify the moment it disappeared. Burnout in that context doesn't feel like a warning sign — it becomes the ambient texture of the days.

Then, in 2018, a late night with a child who wouldn't sleep. Dan found himself scrolling through YouTube in the dark and discovered Wim Hof. He started following the breathwork sequences with the baby on his chest — structured, rhythmic, oddly meditative — and something in him quieted. He'd long believed that no one was coming to save you; that you are ultimately responsible for finding your own way. Wim Hof's philosophy spoke directly to that instinct.

Cold water, though, was a different proposition entirely. The idea of it still sounded miserable — voluntarily entering something freezing when daily life already presented enough discomfort. For now, the breathwork was the discovery; a practice that created stillness where there had been none. The cold could wait.

And I was using the breath work technique that was using the breath work technique that was using the breath work technique that he developed, which is a, you know, he developed, which is a, you know, he developed, which is a, you know, really it's tumor breathing. It's not really it's tumor breathing. It's not really it's tumor breathing. It's not new. It's reorinated really what Whim's new. It's reorinated really what Whim's new. It's reorinated really what Whim's done. He's made he's flat packed it so done. He's made he's flat packed it so done. He's made he's flat packed it so it's accessible. And uh and I just felt it's accessible. And uh and I just felt it's accessible. And uh and I just felt better. Um and I started to feel a bit better. Um and I started to feel a bit better. Um and I started to feel a bit more in control. And u and then of more in control. And u and then of more in control. And u and then of course babies change and there wasn't course babies change and there wasn't course babies change and there wasn't sleepless nights anymore and things you sleepless nights anymore and things you sleepless nights anymore and things you know and I just kept into the Wimhof know and I just kept into the Wimhof know and I just kept into the Wimhof method. Got into cold showers uh through method. Got into cold showers uh through method. Got into cold showers uh through 2019. went on a few Wimhof expedition 2019. went on a few Wimhof expedition 2019. went on a few Wimhof expedition things, you know, where you're kind of things, you know, where you're kind of things, you know, where you're kind of with a group in a lake or and I went to with a group in a lake or and I went to with a group in a lake or and I went to Poland and Wimhof took us all up the Poland and Wimhof took us all up the Poland and Wimhof took us all up the mountain, Mount Schneeska mountain, Mount Schneeska mountain, Mount Schneeska um you know, minus 20 cross winds and um you know, minus 20 cross winds and um you know, minus 20 cross winds and all the rest of it in a pair of shorts all the rest of it in a pair of shorts all the rest of it in a pair of shorts and boots and um and I was changed then and boots and um and I was changed then and boots and um and I was changed then really, you know, it was um I kind of really, you know, it was um I kind of really, you know, it was um I kind of got it. I got what he was talking about. got it. I got what he was talking about. got it. I got what he was talking about. Um I trained to be a Wimhof method

11:00

Um I trained to be a Wimhof method Um I trained to be a Wimhof method instructor. I thought this is exciting. instructor. I thought this is exciting. instructor. I thought this is exciting. this this this feels like a really this this this feels like a really this this this feels like a really future opportunity. I didn't know what I future opportunity. I didn't know what I future opportunity. I didn't know what I was going to do. Long story short, the was going to do. Long story short, the was going to do. Long story short, the business then we we sold into another business then we we sold into another business then we we sold into another company and then that company sold and company and then that company sold and company and then that company sold and and I took the opportunity to exit as and I took the opportunity to exit as and I took the opportunity to exit as fast as possible because I don't really fast as possible because I don't really fast as possible because I don't really work well for people. I'm a bit work well for people. I'm a bit work well for people. I'm a bit disruptive like that and I tend to have disruptive like that and I tend to have disruptive like that and I tend to have my own thoughts and ideas about things. my own thoughts and ideas about things. my own thoughts and ideas about things. Uh I don't mean to be disruptive. I just Uh I don't mean to be disruptive. I just Uh I don't mean to be disruptive. I just tend to have my own thoughts and ideas tend to have my own thoughts and ideas tend to have my own thoughts and ideas and um and I thought I should get out of and um and I thought I should get out of and um and I thought I should get out of fear and and crack on and um and and you fear and and crack on and um and and you fear and and crack on and um and and you know through it was lockdown that know through it was lockdown that know through it was lockdown that crystallized it if I'm honest. I' I'd crystallized it if I'm honest. I' I'd crystallized it if I'm honest. I' I'd got into the cold by then and you know got into the cold by then and you know got into the cold by then and you know when we all locked down and there was when we all locked down and there was when we all locked down and there was that weird time I'm just remembering and that weird time I'm just remembering and that weird time I'm just remembering and and um I converted a chest freezer which and um I converted a chest freezer which and um I converted a chest freezer which my wife was not thrilled about cuz we my wife was not thrilled about cuz we my wife was not thrilled about cuz we really needed freezer space cuz you really needed freezer space cuz you really needed freezer space cuz you could only [ __ ] shop once a week or could only [ __ ] shop once a week or could only [ __ ] shop once a week or something. Yeah. uh like idiots in cues. something. Yeah. uh like idiots in cues. something. Yeah. uh like idiots in cues. Um but um I I remember uh yeah

12:00

Um but um I I remember uh yeah Um but um I I remember uh yeah siliconing up the chest freezer, filling siliconing up the chest freezer, filling siliconing up the chest freezer, filling it with water, made this rudimentary ice it with water, made this rudimentary ice it with water, made this rudimentary ice bath, a little thermometer, 0 degrees, bath, a little thermometer, 0 degrees, bath, a little thermometer, 0 degrees, ice everywhere, thinking, Jesus, this is ice everywhere, thinking, Jesus, this is ice everywhere, thinking, Jesus, this is awesome. And and I just felt changed awesome. And and I just felt changed awesome. And and I just felt changed after. And it was the first time when I after. And it was the first time when I after. And it was the first time when I understood the cold as a therapeutic understood the cold as a therapeutic understood the cold as a therapeutic tool cuz before then it had been a an tool cuz before then it had been a an tool cuz before then it had been a an event, a thing to do, people together. event, a thing to do, people together. event, a thing to do, people together. Wow, what a great crack and amazing Wow, what a great crack and amazing Wow, what a great crack and amazing nature and sunshine and all the rest of nature and sunshine and all the rest of nature and sunshine and all the rest of it. And um very different in a garage on it. And um very different in a garage on it. And um very different in a garage on your own in lockdown in a chest your own in lockdown in a chest your own in lockdown in a chest freezer. Yeah, it's not it's not sexy freezer. Yeah, it's not it's not sexy freezer. Yeah, it's not it's not sexy that [ __ ] really. But I I I went in that [ __ ] really. But I I I went in that [ __ ] really. But I I I went in there feeling like, oh Christ, what am I there feeling like, oh Christ, what am I there feeling like, oh Christ, what am I going to do? You know, how am I going to going to do? You know, how am I going to going to do? You know, how am I going to kick my restart my life? I felt quite a kick my restart my life? I felt quite a kick my restart my life? I felt quite a bit of a failure really. I'd not quite bit of a failure really. I'd not quite bit of a failure really. I'd not quite achieved what I thought I would be uh achieved what I thought I would be uh achieved what I thought I would be uh doing by then. And um but what I when I doing by then. And um but what I when I doing by then. And um but what I when I came out of the ice, I just felt changed came out of the ice, I just felt changed came out of the ice, I just felt changed really. Um I felt all that had gone in really. Um I felt all that had gone in really. Um I felt all that had gone in and suddenly the the fog had cleared,

13:00

and suddenly the the fog had cleared, and suddenly the the fog had cleared, the noise had gone. I felt like uh me the noise had gone. I felt like uh me the noise had gone. I felt like uh me again. And and this idea of it became again. And and this idea of it became again. And and this idea of it became the found it remains the founding idea the found it remains the founding idea the found it remains the founding idea of Brass Monkey that when we're of Brass Monkey that when we're of Brass Monkey that when we're challenged, we're changed. you know it challenged, we're changed. you know it challenged, we're changed. you know it the ice very cold low dose you know low the ice very cold low dose you know low the ice very cold low dose you know low high low temp um and and low duration high low temp um and and low duration high low temp um and and low duration ice baths I for me are great they create ice baths I for me are great they create ice baths I for me are great they create clears the slate you know just feel clears the slate you know just feel clears the slate you know just feel reset and um and and very quickly kind reset and um and and very quickly kind reset and um and and very quickly kind of got the joke of what he was talking of got the joke of what he was talking of got the joke of what he was talking about cuz really Wimhof method centers about cuz really Wimhof method centers about cuz really Wimhof method centers on mindset on mindset on mindset and I learned about managing my mind and and I learned about managing my mind and and I learned about managing my mind and yeah it was then one day I got out of yeah it was then one day I got out of yeah it was then one day I got out of that chest freezer and thought, why is that chest freezer and thought, why is that chest freezer and thought, why is no one built this? Why is no one why is no one built this? Why is no one why is no one built this? Why is no one why is this not a product? And then I looked this not a product? And then I looked this not a product? And then I looked around and there were one or two in the around and there were one or two in the around and there were one or two in the US doing bits. I think there was a US doing bits. I think there was a US doing bits. I think there was a Morosco Forge were the main one that I I Morosco Forge were the main one that I I Morosco Forge were the main one that I I came across. Um uh and and uh yeah, it

14:00

came across. Um uh and and uh yeah, it came across. Um uh and and uh yeah, it was in a conversation with my brother was in a conversation with my brother was in a conversation with my brother when we you know when we could have when we you know when we could have when we you know when we could have barbecues and you everyone's [ __ ] 8 m barbecues and you everyone's [ __ ] 8 m barbecues and you everyone's [ __ ] 8 m apart or whatever and I said I'm going apart or whatever and I said I'm going apart or whatever and I said I'm going to do this um I'm going to do this ice to do this um I'm going to do this ice to do this um I'm going to do this ice bath thing and it's going to be called bath thing and it's going to be called bath thing and it's going to be called Brass Monkey and and he said oh I want Brass Monkey and and he said oh I want Brass Monkey and and he said oh I want to do that and like really you know he to do that and like really you know he to do that and like really you know he pretty successful in the building trade pretty successful in the building trade pretty successful in the building trade my brother and he but he was bored of it my brother and he but he was bored of it my brother and he but he was bored of it and a bit done in and a bit done in and a bit done in you know it's a young man's game I think you know it's a young man's game I think you know it's a young man's game I think from his perspective and um and he said, from his perspective and um and he said, from his perspective and um and he said, "Yeah, I want in on that." So, we we we "Yeah, I want in on that." So, we we we "Yeah, I want in on that." So, we we we did that together. Um and it became a did that together. Um and it became a did that together. Um and it became a figure it out in his garage. And yeah, figure it out in his garage. And yeah, figure it out in his garage. And yeah, here we are now. You're what, three and here we are now. You're what, three and here we are now. You're what, three and a bit years on. It's it's still very new a bit years on. It's it's still very new a bit years on. It's it's still very new really, but it feels like such a long really, but it feels like such a long really, but it feels like such a long time. I love I love that so much. And time. I love I love that so much. And time. I love I love that so much. And actually, um yeah, the Wimhof thing. We actually, um yeah, the Wimhof thing. We actually, um yeah, the Wimhof thing. We did we went and did a Wimhof day, didn't did we went and did a Wimhof day, didn't did we went and did a Wimhof day, didn't we? That was But I loved that. I started we? That was But I loved that. I started we? That was But I loved that. I started with the Wimhof breathing as well, with the Wimhof breathing as well, with the Wimhof breathing as well, probably back in I was a bit later. I probably back in I was a bit later. I probably back in I was a bit later. I think I started doing that in think I started doing that in think I started doing that in 2021 again just to manage um stress and

15:00

2021 again just to manage um stress and 2021 again just to manage um stress and anxiety with everything that's going on anxiety with everything that's going on anxiety with everything that's going on in the world. Oh, it's amazing for that. in the world. Oh, it's amazing for that. in the world. Oh, it's amazing for that. It was so good. And yeah, the cold It was so good. And yeah, the cold It was so good. And yeah, the cold plunging for me came afterwards, but plunging for me came afterwards, but plunging for me came afterwards, but yeah, thrill that you get from that is yeah, thrill that you get from that is yeah, thrill that you get from that is is amazing. Um, so how quickly would you is amazing. Um, so how quickly would you is amazing. Um, so how quickly would you say that you started noticing mental or say that you started noticing mental or say that you started noticing mental or physical improvements once you started physical improvements once you started physical improvements once you started the cold plunging? It it was very quick the cold plunging? It it was very quick the cold plunging? It it was very quick really. uh very quick and and that's the really. uh very quick and and that's the really. uh very quick and and that's the thing with ice baths that it is an thing with ice baths that it is an thing with ice baths that it is an instantaneous change of state really and instantaneous change of state really and instantaneous change of state really and and you can't not do that because men and you can't not do that because men and you can't not do that because men release over a five-fold increase of release over a five-fold increase of release over a five-fold increase of norepinephrine nor adrenaline women a norepinephrine nor adrenaline women a norepinephrine nor adrenaline women a bit lower women react physiologically a bit lower women react physiologically a bit lower women react physiologically a little bit differently to the cold than little bit differently to the cold than little bit differently to the cold than men um and so and that feels like men um and so and that feels like men um and so and that feels like um someone switched on all the lights um someone switched on all the lights um someone switched on all the lights and you know I'm very much awake and and you know I'm very much awake and and you know I'm very much awake and here and now and that makes sense ends here and now and that makes sense ends here and now and that makes sense ends cuz our body's preparing us to not die cuz our body's preparing us to not die cuz our body's preparing us to not die in the cold, you know, because it's in the cold, you know, because it's in the cold, you know, because it's meant as a if you think back, well, why meant as a if you think back, well, why meant as a if you think back, well, why does the body do that? Well, age aged

16:00

does the body do that? Well, age aged does the body do that? Well, age aged evolved over millennia um to keep you evolved over millennia um to keep you evolved over millennia um to keep you alive and primed in in the moment in in alive and primed in in the moment in in alive and primed in in the moment in in what is a a thing to pay attention to. what is a a thing to pay attention to. what is a a thing to pay attention to. Um and so you uh you you get all the um Um and so you uh you you get all the um Um and so you uh you you get all the um I guess the uh evolutionary benefit of I guess the uh evolutionary benefit of I guess the uh evolutionary benefit of that. So you you leave the ice bath very that. So you you leave the ice bath very that. So you you leave the ice bath very quickly change. I would say the the quickly change. I would say the the quickly change. I would say the the emotional feelgood is instantaneous emotional feelgood is instantaneous emotional feelgood is instantaneous every single time from dip one and I'm every single time from dip one and I'm every single time from dip one and I'm sure you guys can uh testify to that. sure you guys can uh testify to that. sure you guys can uh testify to that. However, nervous system regulation takes However, nervous system regulation takes However, nervous system regulation takes time. So, and I think that's that that's time. So, and I think that's that that's time. So, and I think that's that that's that's the bit that changes. So, you get that's the bit that changes. So, you get that's the bit that changes. So, you get you get the immediate feelood and that you get the immediate feelood and that you get the immediate feelood and that that's the alertness. And then dopamine, that's the alertness. And then dopamine, that's the alertness. And then dopamine, two and a half fold increase of two and a half fold increase of two and a half fold increase of dopamine. And dopamine feels like um dopamine. And dopamine feels like um dopamine. And dopamine feels like um dialed in, paying attention to the dialed in, paying attention to the dialed in, paying attention to the moment, uh motivation to do that again. moment, uh motivation to do that again. moment, uh motivation to do that again. Like, wow, I want to do that. That was Like, wow, I want to do that. That was Like, wow, I want to do that. That was horrific. I want to do it again. Um and horrific. I want to do it again. Um and horrific. I want to do it again. Um and and um and and I find that fascinating and um and and I find that fascinating and um and and I find that fascinating because why does your body want to do because why does your body want to do because why does your body want to do that again? Uh because we we evolved

17:00

that again? Uh because we we evolved that again? Uh because we we evolved with it. We grew up around cold water. I with it. We grew up around cold water. I with it. We grew up around cold water. I mean, there's there's lots written on mean, there's there's lots written on mean, there's there's lots written on children were born into bodies of cold children were born into bodies of cold children were born into bodies of cold water. We we evolved next to it. It was water. We we evolved next to it. It was water. We we evolved next to it. It was inherently part of what we did for inherently part of what we did for inherently part of what we did for bathing. And today, it's engineered out bathing. And today, it's engineered out bathing. And today, it's engineered out of our lives. It's gone, isn't it? You of our lives. It's gone, isn't it? You of our lives. It's gone, isn't it? You know, and so people say, "Oh, cold, know, and so people say, "Oh, cold, know, and so people say, "Oh, cold, terrific." You know, we we're not meant terrific." You know, we we're not meant terrific." You know, we we're not meant to do that. It's like what the [ __ ] do to do that. It's like what the [ __ ] do to do that. It's like what the [ __ ] do you think we did two 200 plus years. you think we did two 200 plus years. you think we did two 200 plus years. What do you What do you think we did? What do you What do you think we did? What do you What do you think we did? You know, there was no central eating. You know, there was no central eating. You know, there was no central eating. We evolved in caves and huts and, you We evolved in caves and huts and, you We evolved in caves and huts and, you know, spread out across the world. There know, spread out across the world. There know, spread out across the world. There was no there was no uh comfort. Yeah. It was no there was no uh comfort. Yeah. It was no there was no uh comfort. Yeah. It we were born of it. Um so to answer that we were born of it. Um so to answer that we were born of it. Um so to answer that question on the well, how how do you question on the well, how how do you question on the well, how how do you know when you start to change? Well, know when you start to change? Well, know when you start to change? Well, feel good instant nervous system feel good instant nervous system feel good instant nervous system regulation I think happens within 1 to regulation I think happens within 1 to regulation I think happens within 1 to two weeks. It's reasonably quick and two weeks. It's reasonably quick and two weeks. It's reasonably quick and what it looks like is less what it looks like is less what it looks like is less gasping. The gasping starts to gasping. The gasping starts to gasping. The gasping starts to normalize. And what's happened there is normalize. And what's happened there is normalize. And what's happened there is your nervous system's regulating to the

18:00

your nervous system's regulating to the your nervous system's regulating to the stressor. And when your nervous system stressor. And when your nervous system stressor. And when your nervous system is regulating to that stressor, you is regulating to that stressor, you is regulating to that stressor, you don't get the hike in in uh cortisol. Um don't get the hike in in uh cortisol. Um don't get the hike in in uh cortisol. Um you actually get lowering of cortisol. you actually get lowering of cortisol. you actually get lowering of cortisol. So cortisol being um you it does get So cortisol being um you it does get So cortisol being um you it does get vilified a bit and and and and there's vilified a bit and and and and there's vilified a bit and and and and there's more complex story behind cortisol but more complex story behind cortisol but more complex story behind cortisol but but essentially it's a typically a but essentially it's a typically a but essentially it's a typically a marker of lifestyle chronic stress. Mhm. marker of lifestyle chronic stress. Mhm. marker of lifestyle chronic stress. Mhm. And people like me as I was then um you And people like me as I was then um you And people like me as I was then um you know I wouldn't have known that at the know I wouldn't have known that at the know I wouldn't have known that at the time but a couple of years later I was time but a couple of years later I was time but a couple of years later I was tested for it. You know I had very high tested for it. You know I had very high tested for it. You know I had very high levels of cortisol so I was um stressed levels of cortisol so I was um stressed levels of cortisol so I was um stressed and and didn't know it. Um, but what I and and didn't know it. Um, but what I and and didn't know it. Um, but what I learned through the ice baths was that learned through the ice baths was that learned through the ice baths was that uh I could find calm in the stress and uh I could find calm in the stress and uh I could find calm in the stress and that translated into life. And really I that translated into life. And really I that translated into life. And really I think they're the I think they're the think they're the I think they're the think they're the I think they're the big two benefits. I mean there there are big two benefits. I mean there there are big two benefits. I mean there there are so many benefits to cold water so many benefits to cold water so many benefits to cold water immersion, you know, metabolism and immersion, you know, metabolism and immersion, you know, metabolism and mitochondrial health and bit of immune mitochondrial health and bit of immune mitochondrial health and bit of immune and um but the thing that I really like and um but the thing that I really like and um but the thing that I really like is is that I feel good and I feel

19:00

is is that I feel good and I feel is is that I feel good and I feel stronger and feel stronger just takes a stronger and feel stronger just takes a stronger and feel stronger just takes a bit of time which makes sense. If if you bit of time which makes sense. If if you bit of time which makes sense. If if you were doing a couch to 5k, you would feel were doing a couch to 5k, you would feel were doing a couch to 5k, you would feel good after your first brisk walk, good after your first brisk walk, good after your first brisk walk, but you're not really changed until but you're not really changed until but you're not really changed until you're doing a few. Yeah. Yeah. You you're doing a few. Yeah. Yeah. You you're doing a few. Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's the same thing. And and I know, it's the same thing. And and I know, it's the same thing. And and I think it's the you know, you you would think it's the you know, you you would think it's the you know, you you would look liken it to any other horic look liken it to any other horic look liken it to any other horic stressor. It's not unique in that way. I stressor. It's not unique in that way. I stressor. It's not unique in that way. I don't think you know your body rewards don't think you know your body rewards don't think you know your body rewards you for the short term. I mean, a two you for the short term. I mean, a two you for the short term. I mean, a two and a halffold increase in dopamine is and a halffold increase in dopamine is and a halffold increase in dopamine is equivalent to having sex or taking equivalent to having sex or taking equivalent to having sex or taking cocaine. So, yeah, your body is cocaine. So, yeah, your body is cocaine. So, yeah, your body is rewarding you for doing this thing and rewarding you for doing this thing and rewarding you for doing this thing and and it's natural. It's not it's not a a and it's natural. It's not it's not a a and it's natural. It's not it's not a a drug that you're forcing inside drug that you're forcing inside drug that you're forcing inside yourself. Your body selfgenerates it and yourself. Your body selfgenerates it and yourself. Your body selfgenerates it and um yeah to to reward you. So, yeah, it um yeah to to reward you. So, yeah, it um yeah to to reward you. So, yeah, it took a couple of weeks and then within a took a couple of weeks and then within a took a couple of weeks and then within a couple of months you start to see other couple of months you start to see other couple of months you start to see other changes, much calmer. changes, much calmer. changes, much calmer. Um, you know, the studies I highlight Um, you know, the studies I highlight Um, you know, the studies I highlight now are to do with HIV, heart rate now are to do with HIV, heart rate now are to do with HIV, heart rate variability

20:00

variability variability and HIV, you know, is a phys and HIV, you know, is a phys and HIV, you know, is a phys physiological measure of psychological physiological measure of psychological physiological measure of psychological resilience. And the studies that there resilience. And the studies that there resilience. And the studies that there are saying that people who approach cold are saying that people who approach cold are saying that people who approach cold water that is scary get the greatest water that is scary get the greatest water that is scary get the greatest benefit. So, it has to induce anxiety, benefit. So, it has to induce anxiety, benefit. So, it has to induce anxiety, which makes sense because if you want to which makes sense because if you want to which makes sense because if you want to get better at running, you have to do a get better at running, you have to do a get better at running, you have to do a run that's going to challenge you. Cuz run that's going to challenge you. Cuz run that's going to challenge you. Cuz when we're challenged, we're changed. If when we're challenged, we're changed. If when we're challenged, we're changed. If you don't challenge yourself, you're not you don't challenge yourself, you're not you don't challenge yourself, you're not going to improve. So HIV is is improving going to improve. So HIV is is improving going to improve. So HIV is is improving by being challenged enough but not over by being challenged enough but not over by being challenged enough but not over challenged. So it's always challenged. So it's always challenged. So it's always you I'm very cautious to give people, you I'm very cautious to give people, you I'm very cautious to give people, you know, how long should I go and you know, how long should I go and you know, how long should I go and advice and whatever. But generally advice and whatever. But generally advice and whatever. But generally speaking, speaking, speaking, just make sure it's scary enough and just make sure it's scary enough and just make sure it's scary enough and keep it safe. It should always be scary keep it safe. It should always be scary keep it safe. It should always be scary enough if you want to get the real enough if you want to get the real enough if you want to get the real nervous system benefits. That that said, nervous system benefits. That that said, nervous system benefits. That that said, there's value in a cold shower for there's value in a cold shower for there's value in a cold shower for emotional feelgood and and a wake up. emotional feelgood and and a wake up. emotional feelgood and and a wake up. There's value in a warmer cold water There's value in a warmer cold water There's value in a warmer cold water immersion because you can do

21:00

immersion because you can do immersion because you can do um I guess you can approach it really as um I guess you can approach it really as um I guess you can approach it really as a maybe a community o community a maybe a community o community a maybe a community o community opportunity a way to uh be with other opportunity a way to uh be with other opportunity a way to uh be with other people to get out and mental health and people to get out and mental health and people to get out and mental health and it depends what your why is. Uh but it depends what your why is. Uh but it depends what your why is. Uh but always remembering that it's a study of always remembering that it's a study of always remembering that it's a study of one really you know you everyone else is one really you know you everyone else is one really you know you everyone else is not you. You've got your own collection not you. You've got your own collection not you. You've got your own collection of baggage and stuff you're worried of baggage and stuff you're worried of baggage and stuff you're worried about. Your nervous system load is about. Your nervous system load is about. Your nervous system load is different to them. Your physical health different to them. Your physical health different to them. Your physical health is different. Your level of nutrition, is different. Your level of nutrition, is different. Your level of nutrition, sleep quality, so many variables. Yeah. sleep quality, so many variables. Yeah. sleep quality, so many variables. Yeah. So when I see people saying, "Oh, well, So when I see people saying, "Oh, well, So when I see people saying, "Oh, well, it should be this and it should be that it should be this and it should be that it should be this and it should be that and it should be, oh, that's not really and it should be, oh, that's not really and it should be, oh, that's not really that's not really helping anyone because that's not really helping anyone because that's not really helping anyone because then people adopt that and and might not then people adopt that and and might not then people adopt that and and might not gain anything or push themselves too gain anything or push themselves too gain anything or push themselves too hard and it doesn't work, right? I'm not hard and it doesn't work, right? I'm not hard and it doesn't work, right? I'm not doing it. It doesn't work." But doing it. It doesn't work." But doing it. It doesn't work." But actually, just go gently with it for actually, just go gently with it for actually, just go gently with it for you. And and it's no different to some you. And and it's no different to some you. And and it's no different to some to giving good advice to someone who to giving good advice to someone who to giving good advice to someone who wants to start running. Keeping on that

22:00

wants to start running. Keeping on that wants to start running. Keeping on that running comparison. Go gently with a running comparison. Go gently with a running comparison. Go gently with a brisk walk, you know, kind of one mile brisk walk, you know, kind of one mile brisk walk, you know, kind of one mile or something. Something simple and and or something. Something simple and and or something. Something simple and and sensible where you can't strain and pull sensible where you can't strain and pull sensible where you can't strain and pull and put heavy load immediately on your and put heavy load immediately on your and put heavy load immediately on your body and see how you feel and do it body and see how you feel and do it body and see how you feel and do it again the next day. And then, you know, again the next day. And then, you know, again the next day. And then, you know, and improve and it's the same with cold and improve and it's the same with cold and improve and it's the same with cold water. Right. And just to confirm when water. Right. And just to confirm when water. Right. And just to confirm when you were saying it takes about two you were saying it takes about two you were saying it takes about two weeks, you're meaning like cold plunging weeks, you're meaning like cold plunging weeks, you're meaning like cold plunging every day. Just to to confirm to like every day. Just to to confirm to like every day. Just to to confirm to like listeners um like every day for a couple listeners um like every day for a couple listeners um like every day for a couple of weeks. I did. I I did. So I'm talking of weeks. I did. I I did. So I'm talking of weeks. I did. I I did. So I'm talking about my experience. Would I do it every about my experience. Would I do it every about my experience. Would I do it every day if it was a mild temperature day if it was a mild temperature day if it was a mild temperature 10° and going in for a minute? Yes. 10° and going in for a minute? Yes. 10° and going in for a minute? Yes. Every day. Because it's a it's quite Every day. Because it's a it's quite Every day. Because it's a it's quite low. It's quite a low load. And see how low. It's quite a low load. And see how low. It's quite a low load. And see how you feel. And if you think, "Oh, this is you feel. And if you think, "Oh, this is you feel. And if you think, "Oh, this is um yeah, I feel good afterwards." How do um yeah, I feel good afterwards." How do um yeah, I feel good afterwards." How do you feel for the rest of the day? If you you feel for the rest of the day? If you you feel for the rest of the day? If you feel exhausted and too cold, your feel exhausted and too cold, your feel exhausted and too cold, your nervous system's probably not ready for nervous system's probably not ready for nervous system's probably not ready for that that frequency. So, you would just

23:00

that that frequency. So, you would just that that frequency. So, you would just throttle it back to maybe every 3 or 4 throttle it back to maybe every 3 or 4 throttle it back to maybe every 3 or 4 days, you know, once or twice a week. days, you know, once or twice a week. days, you know, once or twice a week. But if you think I just feel good, you But if you think I just feel good, you But if you think I just feel good, you might think, well, let let's drop the might think, well, let let's drop the might think, well, let let's drop the temperature a bit or let's play with the temperature a bit or let's play with the temperature a bit or let's play with the um with the duration because they're the um with the duration because they're the um with the duration because they're the two levers of I I see as is you are two levers of I I see as is you are two levers of I I see as is you are getting a dose. You're collecting a getting a dose. You're collecting a getting a dose. You're collecting a dosage and dosage is temperature and dosage and dosage is temperature and dosage and dosage is temperature and duration which is the great thing about duration which is the great thing about duration which is the great thing about your product actually because you can your product actually because you can your product actually because you can change the temperature. It's not like change the temperature. It's not like change the temperature. It's not like the thing. Yeah. And truthfully, they the thing. Yeah. And truthfully, they the thing. Yeah. And truthfully, they all I mean they all do that. They all all I mean they all do that. They all all I mean they all do that. They all they all you know our products unique. I they all you know our products unique. I they all you know our products unique. I mean, our products the I would say mean, our products the I would say mean, our products the I would say without doubt the best in the world, but without doubt the best in the world, but without doubt the best in the world, but it's not for everyone and it's not it's not for everyone and it's not it's not for everyone and it's not priced for everyone because we didn't priced for everyone because we didn't priced for everyone because we didn't set out to make an average product. We set out to make an average product. We set out to make an average product. We set out to make the best product that we set out to make the best product that we set out to make the best product that we could physically do. You know, that the could physically do. You know, that the could physically do. You know, that the brand mission was has always been from a brand mission was has always been from a brand mission was has always been from a product point of view um to build the product point of view um to build the product point of view um to build the the jacuzzi of ice baths. We want to be the jacuzzi of ice baths. We want to be the jacuzzi of ice baths. We want to be at the top end. We want to be the the at the top end. We want to be the the at the top end. We want to be the the name that's synonymous with the name that's synonymous with the name that's synonymous with the category. So that when people talk about category. So that when people talk about category. So that when people talk about ice baths, they talk about Brass Monkey. ice baths, they talk about Brass Monkey. ice baths, they talk about Brass Monkey. Even if they mean something else, it's Even if they mean something else, it's Even if they mean something else, it's like when we say Dyson now or Hoover

24:00

like when we say Dyson now or Hoover like when we say Dyson now or Hoover back in the day, it spoke to a category. back in the day, it spoke to a category. back in the day, it spoke to a category. That that was always my, you know, from That that was always my, you know, from That that was always my, you know, from a marketing background, that was always a marketing background, that was always a marketing background, that was always my goal really to be synonymous with my goal really to be synonymous with my goal really to be synonymous with category, but not for everyone because I category, but not for everyone because I category, but not for everyone because I don't think the brand and product are don't think the brand and product are don't think the brand and product are not the same thing. Yeah. You know, some not the same thing. Yeah. You know, some not the same thing. Yeah. You know, some brands have a product, but not every brands have a product, but not every brands have a product, but not every product is a brand. And we're sur we're product is a brand. And we're sur we're product is a brand. And we're sur we're surrounded now by um many many products surrounded now by um many many products surrounded now by um many many products all out of China that do the same thing all out of China that do the same thing all out of China that do the same thing in different vessel shapes and whatever. in different vessel shapes and whatever. in different vessel shapes and whatever. And that's that's cool. That that's And that's that's cool. That that's And that's that's cool. That that's fine. That's that's that's that's fine. That's that's that's that's fine. That's that's that's that's inevitable and it's good generally for inevitable and it's good generally for inevitable and it's good generally for the category. And and and I want to see the category. And and and I want to see the category. And and and I want to see more people benefiting from cold dips more people benefiting from cold dips more people benefiting from cold dips first and foremost. Um we're finding our first and foremost. Um we're finding our first and foremost. Um we're finding our way now more into commercial. way now more into commercial. way now more into commercial. M I so the more we've innovated so M I so the more we've innovated so M I so the more we've innovated so highly innovative company it's just kind highly innovative company it's just kind highly innovative company it's just kind of just turns out it's kind of what we of just turns out it's kind of what we of just turns out it's kind of what we do really we we we've just never stop do really we we we've just never stop do really we we we've just never stop you know it's always um elevating the you know it's always um elevating the you know it's always um elevating the conversation so whether that's now with conversation so whether that's now with conversation so whether that's now with uh David Lloyd and Virgin Active and

25:00

uh David Lloyd and Virgin Active and uh David Lloyd and Virgin Active and Village Hotels and uh you know we we're Village Hotels and uh you know we we're Village Hotels and uh you know we we're talking to we have multiple units with talking to we have multiple units with talking to we have multiple units with six senses hotel group you so many six senses hotel group you so many six senses hotel group you so many different companies um they challenge us different companies um they challenge us different companies um they challenge us they challenge us with, well, we want to they challenge us with, well, we want to they challenge us with, well, we want to be able to do this and we want to be be able to do this and we want to be be able to do this and we want to be able to do that and can you sync it in able to do that and can you sync it in able to do that and can you sync it in the floor and can we have it for eight the floor and can we have it for eight the floor and can we have it for eight people and um we I was at um an event people and um we I was at um an event people and um we I was at um an event last night in at Ark in Canary Warf. I'm last night in at Ark in Canary Warf. I'm last night in at Ark in Canary Warf. I'm not sure if you're Yeah. Yeah. Have you not sure if you're Yeah. Yeah. Have you not sure if you're Yeah. Yeah. Have you been there? No, I've heard of it. Not been there? No, I've heard of it. Not been there? No, I've heard of it. Not been there. Yeah. Well, if you'd like to been there. Yeah. Well, if you'd like to been there. Yeah. Well, if you'd like to go, we can, you know, we'll get you some go, we can, you know, we'll get you some go, we can, you know, we'll get you some some tickets to get down there and some tickets to get down there and some tickets to get down there and experience that. So you know that that experience that. So you know that that experience that. So you know that that is a really um important installation is a really um important installation is a really um important installation for us because it's eight two person ice for us because it's eight two person ice for us because it's eight two person ice baths that dual cool and they're you baths that dual cool and they're you baths that dual cool and they're you know as an example they're connected to know as an example they're connected to know as an example they're connected to the um condensing system of Canary W. So the um condensing system of Canary W. So the um condensing system of Canary W. So they actually cool through water not they actually cool through water not they actually cool through water not through blowing warm air off and and through blowing warm air off and and through blowing warm air off and and that's just not easy. That's not easy

26:00

that's just not easy. That's not easy that's just not easy. That's not easy stuff to do. and and and it challenges stuff to do. and and and it challenges stuff to do. and and and it challenges us to, you know, kind of lift our game us to, you know, kind of lift our game us to, you know, kind of lift our game and and and so we we we feel more like and and and so we we we feel more like and and and so we we we feel more like we're moving into that commercial and we're moving into that commercial and we're moving into that commercial and architectural high-end. Um Yeah, that's architectural high-end. Um Yeah, that's architectural high-end. Um Yeah, that's exciting. Yeah. Yeah. And it's not exciting. Yeah. Yeah. And it's not exciting. Yeah. Yeah. And it's not through design. It's just through it through design. It's just through it through design. It's just through it turns out we're that type of company turns out we're that type of company turns out we're that type of company really. Um and and maybe we'll bring out really. Um and and maybe we'll bring out really. Um and and maybe we'll bring out cheaper products and and may maybe we cheaper products and and may maybe we cheaper products and and may maybe we won't. I have no idea. I don't really won't. I have no idea. I don't really won't. I have no idea. I don't really worry about it. It's kind of more what's worry about it. It's kind of more what's worry about it. It's kind of more what's in front of us. what can we afford to in front of us. what can we afford to in front of us. what can we afford to do? What's turned out to be the benefit do? What's turned out to be the benefit do? What's turned out to be the benefit of commercial is I guess two two things of commercial is I guess two two things of commercial is I guess two two things in simple terms. It seems to fit the DNA in simple terms. It seems to fit the DNA in simple terms. It seems to fit the DNA of the company trying to do more things, of the company trying to do more things, of the company trying to do more things, be more challenged, more innovative, but be more challenged, more innovative, but be more challenged, more innovative, but it also fits that brand mission. So we it also fits that brand mission. So we it also fits that brand mission. So we create so much content and and um you create so much content and and um you create so much content and and um you know want to share how how to do it, why know want to share how how to do it, why know want to share how how to do it, why to do it because from a brand point of to do it because from a brand point of to do it because from a brand point of view I just want to liberate access to view I just want to liberate access to view I just want to liberate access to co plunging for more people and the co plunging for more people and the co plunging for more people and the commercial route actually does that commercial route actually does that commercial route actually does that better for us. Yeah. So, uh, Arc Arc at

27:00

better for us. Yeah. So, uh, Arc Arc at better for us. Yeah. So, uh, Arc Arc at Canary Canary Canary Warf last night, watching 60 people go Warf last night, watching 60 people go Warf last night, watching 60 people go through them and feel energized and through them and feel energized and through them and feel energized and excited, it reminds me like why we do excited, it reminds me like why we do excited, it reminds me like why we do it, you know, and feel it feels like we it, you know, and feel it feels like we it, you know, and feel it feels like we make a difference to people, you know, make a difference to people, you know, make a difference to people, you know, cuz we we enable that alongside cuz we we enable that alongside cuz we we enable that alongside obviously businesses like ARC and um, obviously businesses like ARC and um, obviously businesses like ARC and um, you know, as we as we look at these you know, as we as we look at these you know, as we as we look at these larger deals with these global chains, larger deals with these global chains, larger deals with these global chains, um, if and if we can get that to work, um, if and if we can get that to work, um, if and if we can get that to work, yeah, who who knows? was its early days yeah, who who knows? was its early days yeah, who who knows? was its early days for us, but it would mean greater access for us, but it would mean greater access for us, but it would mean greater access to cold water immersion for more people to cold water immersion for more people to cold water immersion for more people and and and that feels very on brand in and and and that feels very on brand in and and and that feels very on brand in that sense. Well, I think also in that sense. Well, I think also in that sense. Well, I think also in London, well, any any urban center where London, well, any any urban center where London, well, any any urban center where we don't have outside space like we we don't have outside space like we we don't have outside space like we don't something like that's amazing. don't something like that's amazing. don't something like that's amazing. That's why we did the King's Crossing. That's why we did the King's Crossing. That's why we did the King's Crossing. We got so excited about it. So, it We got so excited about it. So, it We got so excited about it. So, it really is I I totally agree. I think really is I I totally agree. I think really is I I totally agree. I think it's delivering something just really it's delivering something just really it's delivering something just really beautiful to people. Access to be able beautiful to people. Access to be able beautiful to people. Access to be able to go and cold lunch and experience the to go and cold lunch and experience the to go and cold lunch and experience the benefits that we know and that you've

28:00

benefits that we know and that you've benefits that we know and that you've shared. shared. shared. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I I love watching Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I I love watching Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I I love watching the impact of it. That's the impact of it. That's the impact of it. That's even when we do events. So we we're at even when we do events. So we we're at even when we do events. So we we're at Joe Wixs again. um high Q gardens and we Joe Wixs again. um high Q gardens and we Joe Wixs again. um high Q gardens and we did that last year and did that last year and did that last year and you watch hundreds if not a thousand you watch hundreds if not a thousand you watch hundreds if not a thousand people you know go through the um go people you know go through the um go people you know go through the um go through the ice baths and you know through the ice baths and you know through the ice baths and you know screaming and running around and screaming and running around and screaming and running around and thinking you know it's pretty definitive thinking you know it's pretty definitive thinking you know it's pretty definitive you know kind of the impact of it male you know kind of the impact of it male you know kind of the impact of it male female big large you know people react female big large you know people react female big large you know people react generally the same way they come out generally the same way they come out generally the same way they come out feeling better than when they went in feeling better than when they went in feeling better than when they went in yeah I just want to talk um just talked yeah I just want to talk um just talked yeah I just want to talk um just talked to something that you mentioned earlier to something that you mentioned earlier to something that you mentioned earlier on actually about um midlife. I suppose on actually about um midlife. I suppose on actually about um midlife. I suppose this is for kind of on point with what this is for kind of on point with what this is for kind of on point with what your book's about as well, your book's about as well, your book's about as well, but kind of going off off brass monkey but kind of going off off brass monkey but kind of going off off brass monkey slightly and talking back about your slightly and talking back about your slightly and talking back about your experience if that's okay about there

29:00

experience if that's okay about there experience if that's okay about there are so many midlife men I think I don't are so many midlife men I think I don't are so many midlife men I think I don't know whether I'm categorizing you know whether I'm categorizing you know whether I'm categorizing you wrongly there but you know like I think wrongly there but you know like I think wrongly there but you know like I think midlife men really do struggle with what midlife men really do struggle with what midlife men really do struggle with what you've said about that level of stress you've said about that level of stress you've said about that level of stress and pressure and kind of keeping it to and pressure and kind of keeping it to and pressure and kind of keeping it to themselves and feeling like they've got themselves and feeling like they've got themselves and feeling like they've got the world on their shoulders the world on their shoulders the world on their shoulders financially, workwise, keeping it all financially, workwise, keeping it all financially, workwise, keeping it all together. Um, and not being present and together. Um, and not being present and together. Um, and not being present and then being told, "Well, you're not then being told, "Well, you're not then being told, "Well, you're not present. You're not here. This is, you present. You're not here. This is, you present. You're not here. This is, you know, you're having out-of- body know, you're having out-of- body know, you're having out-of- body experiences almost all the time." And I experiences almost all the time." And I experiences almost all the time." And I just I suppose I just want to speak to just I suppose I just want to speak to just I suppose I just want to speak to the fact that you found the fact that you found the fact that you found so much relief and kind of like solace so much relief and kind of like solace so much relief and kind of like solace in and then you've created this this in and then you've created this this in and then you've created this this brand. brand. brand. Um, do you see where's my where's this Um, do you see where's my where's this Um, do you see where's my where's this going? I suppose I want to ask, do you going? I suppose I want to ask, do you going? I suppose I want to ask, do you see that like James does and I do as a see that like James does and I do as a see that like James does and I do as a general theme amongst midlife men is general theme amongst midlife men is general theme amongst midlife men is they do find it difficult, I suppose, to they do find it difficult, I suppose, to they do find it difficult, I suppose, to even know what they're experiencing? even know what they're experiencing? even know what they're experiencing? Like you said, I didn't even know I was Like you said, I didn't even know I was Like you said, I didn't even know I was I didn't even know I was experiencing

30:00

I didn't even know I was experiencing I didn't even know I was experiencing burnout. Um, yeah. Do you see that a burnout. Um, yeah. Do you see that a burnout. Um, yeah. Do you see that a lot? And and does it this kind of stuff lot? And and does it this kind of stuff lot? And and does it this kind of stuff really help midlife men? I suppose it's really help midlife men? I suppose it's really help midlife men? I suppose it's it's insane. Yes. Yeah. And I would say it's insane. Yes. Yeah. And I would say it's insane. Yes. Yeah. And I would say that the most people I speak to go into that the most people I speak to go into that the most people I speak to go into the cold, male or female, really because the cold, male or female, really because the cold, male or female, really because of emotional and nervous system or of emotional and nervous system or of emotional and nervous system or mental health mental health mental health challenges much more than fitness challenges much more than fitness challenges much more than fitness recovery and fitness, you know, whether recovery and fitness, you know, whether recovery and fitness, you know, whether it's the cold water immersion as opposed it's the cold water immersion as opposed it's the cold water immersion as opposed to a bag of peas. It's that, you know, to a bag of peas. It's that, you know, to a bag of peas. It's that, you know, that's a known thing, isn't it? you that's a known thing, isn't it? you that's a known thing, isn't it? you know, you're leveraging really know, you're leveraging really know, you're leveraging really norepinephrine's impact as a hormone to norepinephrine's impact as a hormone to norepinephrine's impact as a hormone to systematically systematically systematically uh cool and uh reduce inflammation in in uh cool and uh reduce inflammation in in uh cool and uh reduce inflammation in in the body. the body. the body. And h has um And h has um And h has um psychological aspects to it as well. And psychological aspects to it as well. And psychological aspects to it as well. And and the neuropinephrine also acts as a and the neuropinephrine also acts as a and the neuropinephrine also acts as a neurotransmitter as well as a hormone.

31:00

neurotransmitter as well as a hormone. neurotransmitter as well as a hormone. and it does different things then and and it does different things then and and it does different things then and that's what makes you feel different and that's what makes you feel different and that's what makes you feel different and and that you know that that's the and that you know that that's the and that you know that that's the benefit of that and then there's benefit of that and then there's benefit of that and then there's implications on brain health but I would implications on brain health but I would implications on brain health but I would say certainly middle-aged men feel like say certainly middle-aged men feel like say certainly middle-aged men feel like they need tools to use to do a job and they need tools to use to do a job and they need tools to use to do a job and and that that's and I think cold water and that that's and I think cold water and that that's and I think cold water immersion can be more than that but in immersion can be more than that but in immersion can be more than that but in simple terms you can use it as a tool as simple terms you can use it as a tool as simple terms you can use it as a tool as as an intervention to create a space. as an intervention to create a space. as an intervention to create a space. And that's what it did for me. It And that's what it did for me. It And that's what it did for me. It created a space because by feeling created a space because by feeling created a space because by feeling different coming out of the water, I different coming out of the water, I different coming out of the water, I could see things again. could see things again. could see things again. And the cumulative effect over time was And the cumulative effect over time was And the cumulative effect over time was I wasn't as riled by that anymore. I I wasn't as riled by that anymore. I I wasn't as riled by that anymore. I wasn't wasn't wasn't as aggravated and responsive and as aggravated and responsive and as aggravated and responsive and triggered. I just felt I just felt triggered. I just felt I just felt triggered. I just felt I just felt calmer. I just felt calmer generally in calmer. I just felt calmer generally in calmer. I just felt calmer generally in life. And um and it was the benefit of

32:00

life. And um and it was the benefit of life. And um and it was the benefit of that. It's really hard to put into that. It's really hard to put into that. It's really hard to put into words, but I would feel that I used to words, but I would feel that I used to words, but I would feel that I used to go to to work just as I was ending go to to work just as I was ending go to to work just as I was ending ending kind of that part of my life ending kind of that part of my life ending kind of that part of my life really in agency land. And I feel like I really in agency land. And I feel like I really in agency land. And I feel like I had a had a had a superpower. That's what it felt like. superpower. That's what it felt like. superpower. That's what it felt like. And then no one knew because it wasn't And then no one knew because it wasn't And then no one knew because it wasn't it wasn't a thing then getting in cold. it wasn't a thing then getting in cold. it wasn't a thing then getting in cold. It weren't really a thing in 20. Yeah. I It weren't really a thing in 20. Yeah. I It weren't really a thing in 20. Yeah. I love that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you know, love that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you know, love that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you know, 2020, 2021 as we started to eek back 2020, 2021 as we started to eek back 2020, 2021 as we started to eek back into work, but even late 2019, you know, into work, but even late 2019, you know, into work, but even late 2019, you know, I was going from the chest freezer into I was going from the chest freezer into I was going from the chest freezer into work and and feeling energized and calm work and and feeling energized and calm work and and feeling energized and calm like, you know, there's a there's a like, you know, there's a there's a like, you know, there's a there's a Superman under a Clark Kent. Yeah. kind Superman under a Clark Kent. Yeah. kind Superman under a Clark Kent. Yeah. kind of exterior and uh I felt capable. I of exterior and uh I felt capable. I of exterior and uh I felt capable. I felt more. I felt I could be more felt more. I felt I could be more felt more. I felt I could be more amazing. Um and and uh but not in that amazing. Um and and uh but not in that amazing. Um and and uh but not in that sense of pursuing anything. it it felt sense of pursuing anything. it it felt sense of pursuing anything. it it felt more an internal win like I've just got more an internal win like I've just got more an internal win like I've just got more capacity, more calm. Um, but you

more capacity, more calm. Um, but you more capacity, more calm. Um, but you see I mean I see I see the same thing see I mean I see I see the same thing see I mean I see I see the same thing with with women. You know, women they with with women. You know, women they with with women. You know, women they don't get the same stress response as don't get the same stress response as don't get the same stress response as men men men is different in in cold for them. You is different in in cold for them. You is different in in cold for them. You know, men are triggered more by the know, men are triggered more by the know, men are triggered more by the cold. It's weird. Women Women have more cold. It's weird. Women Women have more cold. It's weird. Women Women have more cold receptors, so they are more likely cold receptors, so they are more likely cold receptors, so they are more likely to feel more cold more of the time. Mhm. to feel more cold more of the time. Mhm. to feel more cold more of the time. Mhm. But perversely, when they go in cold But perversely, when they go in cold But perversely, when they go in cold water, they're less triggered by it, water, they're less triggered by it, water, they're less triggered by it, which is weird. You know, if you if you which is weird. You know, if you if you which is weird. You know, if you if you I've watched this at events, you take a I've watched this at events, you take a I've watched this at events, you take a thousand people, 500 women, 500 men thousand people, 500 women, 500 men thousand people, 500 women, 500 men through an ice bath. Typically, the men through an ice bath. Typically, the men through an ice bath. Typically, the men will gasp way more than the women. The will gasp way more than the women. The will gasp way more than the women. The women go in like ninjas like they've women go in like ninjas like they've women go in like ninjas like they've done it all along. Like, I don't know done it all along. Like, I don't know done it all along. Like, I don't know what that is. I don't know what that is. what that is. I don't know what that is. what that is. I don't know what that is. And some of the science that's coming And some of the science that's coming And some of the science that's coming out on that now by St Dr. Stacy Sims, out on that now by St Dr. Stacy Sims, out on that now by St Dr. Stacy Sims, you know, women get a lot of the you know, women get a lot of the you know, women get a lot of the benefits more easily because the the way benefits more easily because the the way benefits more easily because the the way that they reheat uh through their that they reheat uh through their that they reheat uh through their cardiovascular system, whereas men will cardiovascular system, whereas men will cardiovascular system, whereas men will tend to feel colder for longer.

tend to feel colder for longer. tend to feel colder for longer. We we warm up differently. There's a We we warm up differently. There's a We we warm up differently. There's a real there's a real difference in that. real there's a real difference in that. real there's a real difference in that. But at its core, we're using the same But at its core, we're using the same But at its core, we're using the same tool to the same outcome, which is to tool to the same outcome, which is to tool to the same outcome, which is to feel more resilient. The difference for feel more resilient. The difference for feel more resilient. The difference for women is go a bit warmer. go a bit a bit women is go a bit warmer. go a bit a bit women is go a bit warmer. go a bit a bit more gently than you probably imagine. more gently than you probably imagine. more gently than you probably imagine. Uh respecting monthly cycles and kind of Uh respecting monthly cycles and kind of Uh respecting monthly cycles and kind of wherever you're at as you're near your wherever you're at as you're near your wherever you're at as you're near your period, don't probably get in the cold period, don't probably get in the cold period, don't probably get in the cold water. That's really and the first first water. That's really and the first first water. That's really and the first first few days of the period probably don't few days of the period probably don't few days of the period probably don't get into the cold water. It's going to get into the cold water. It's going to get into the cold water. It's going to be harder. Um but you be harder. Um but you be harder. Um but you know, try try consciously. What's that know, try try consciously. What's that know, try try consciously. What's that like? It probably will be wise to not do like? It probably will be wise to not do like? It probably will be wise to not do that. Um men don't have that. Men don't that. Um men don't have that. Men don't that. Um men don't have that. Men don't have that. have that. have that. For me when I talk to bloss it's it's For me when I talk to bloss it's it's For me when I talk to bloss it's it's always a give it just give it a go but always a give it just give it a go but always a give it just give it a go but go gentle. It is a tool for go gentle. It is a tool for go gentle. It is a tool for rejuvenation. It's not a tool for rejuvenation. It's not a tool for rejuvenation. It's not a tool for testing. Yeah. Yeah. So my early testing. Yeah. Yeah. So my early testing. Yeah. Yeah. So my early experience of ice baths where where I

35:00

experience of ice baths where where I experience of ice baths where where I went went went wrong was wrong was wrong was very more will be better. very more will be better. very more will be better. More it's bound to be better. to get More it's bound to be better. to get More it's bound to be better. to get into that. Isn't it easy? That's also into that. Isn't it easy? That's also into that. Isn't it easy? That's also part of the male psyche, right? It's part of the male psyche, right? It's part of the male psyche, right? It's like, oh, I want to challenge myself. I like, oh, I want to challenge myself. I like, oh, I want to challenge myself. I want to do it. I want to do it hard. I want to do it. I want to do it hard. I want to do it. I want to do it hard. I want to do it for longer. I want to make want to do it for longer. I want to make want to do it for longer. I want to make it more difficult. But it's not always it more difficult. But it's not always it more difficult. But it's not always helpful. No. Age, guys. Yeah. No. And helpful. No. Age, guys. Yeah. No. And helpful. No. Age, guys. Yeah. No. And and also you and also you and also you you get you get some good results from you get you get some good results from you get you get some good results from it. You think, "Wow, I feel good." Well, it. You think, "Wow, I feel good." Well, it. You think, "Wow, I feel good." Well, if if I felt good at two minutes, surely if if I felt good at two minutes, surely if if I felt good at two minutes, surely five, I'll be epic. five, I'll be epic. five, I'll be epic. And and so I got into this into this And and so I got into this into this And and so I got into this into this loop. Um it didn't go well. Um and um loop. Um it didn't go well. Um and um loop. Um it didn't go well. Um and um and and what happened to me was um I and and what happened to me was um I and and what happened to me was um I remember one day I I it was through remember one day I I it was through remember one day I I it was through lockdown definitely cuz I was walking on lockdown definitely cuz I was walking on lockdown definitely cuz I was walking on my own. And um and I just came over my own. And um and I just came over my own. And um and I just came over really grim, felt awful. Felt I felt my really grim, felt awful. Felt I felt my really grim, felt awful. Felt I felt my body temperature really low. It was a body temperature really low. It was a body temperature really low. It was a warm because the summer was bloody

36:00

warm because the summer was bloody warm because the summer was bloody great, wasn't it? And I was going great, wasn't it? And I was going great, wasn't it? And I was going through I was going through what I'd through I was going through what I'd through I was going through what I'd later learn later learn later learn is after drop. So your body continues to is after drop. So your body continues to is after drop. So your body continues to cool after the ice bath. So I'd been in cool after the ice bath. So I'd been in cool after the ice bath. So I'd been in there for like I don't know probably there for like I don't know probably there for like I don't know probably going for 10 minutes or something and going for 10 minutes or something and going for 10 minutes or something and it's freezing with ice cubes. You ice it's freezing with ice cubes. You ice it's freezing with ice cubes. You ice from the chest freezer. Uh and I've you from the chest freezer. Uh and I've you from the chest freezer. Uh and I've you know I've done it and I remember my know I've done it and I remember my know I've done it and I remember my hands were purple and white like hands were purple and white like hands were purple and white like rainardsy kind of thing. Skin tone looks rainardsy kind of thing. Skin tone looks rainardsy kind of thing. Skin tone looks oh and I just thought oh [ __ ] would you oh and I just thought oh [ __ ] would you oh and I just thought oh [ __ ] would you know I had to sit down and I just sat know I had to sit down and I just sat know I had to sit down and I just sat down in the sun and I had to just just down in the sun and I had to just just down in the sun and I had to just just gently rewarm and I was fine after half gently rewarm and I was fine after half gently rewarm and I was fine after half an hour. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but it but it an hour. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but it but it an hour. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but it but it taught it taught me a lot. It taught me taught it taught me a lot. It taught me taught it taught me a lot. It taught me a lot and and and that gave me a new a lot and and and that gave me a new a lot and and and that gave me a new frame of reference, right? Okay, it's frame of reference, right? Okay, it's frame of reference, right? Okay, it's possible to overdose. And what does that possible to overdose. And what does that possible to overdose. And what does that mean? mean? mean? And I kind of got the joke then. I got And I kind of got the joke then. I got And I kind of got the joke then. I got the joke. Actually, this is really about the joke. Actually, this is really about the joke. Actually, this is really about knowing where you're at. So when I go to knowing where you're at. So when I go to knowing where you're at. So when I go to the ice bath the ice bath the ice bath now, you know, as I've explained, you now, you know, as I've explained, you now, you know, as I've explained, you know, young know, young know, young family, lots going on and and and some

37:00

family, lots going on and and and some family, lots going on and and and some days my nervous system is triggered. days my nervous system is triggered. days my nervous system is triggered. Yeah. Yeah. Because it is for everyone, Yeah. Yeah. Because it is for everyone, Yeah. Yeah. Because it is for everyone, isn't it? And um and it's important to isn't it? And um and it's important to isn't it? And um and it's important to know that. So what does that feel like? know that. So what does that feel like? know that. So what does that feel like? Well, that's your job to check in with Well, that's your job to check in with Well, that's your job to check in with that. I know what that feels like for that. I know what that feels like for that. I know what that feels like for me. I feel like as I walk towards it, I me. I feel like as I walk towards it, I me. I feel like as I walk towards it, I feel more anxious. So, as I walk towards feel more anxious. So, as I walk towards feel more anxious. So, as I walk towards the ice path, I think, "Oh, I don't know the ice path, I think, "Oh, I don't know the ice path, I think, "Oh, I don't know how up first I am. I'm not quite sure how up first I am. I'm not quite sure how up first I am. I'm not quite sure today." Uh, I'm telling myself stories. today." Uh, I'm telling myself stories. today." Uh, I'm telling myself stories. Oh, I should go check on the kids, you Oh, I should go check on the kids, you Oh, I should go check on the kids, you know. It's like 5 in the morning and know. It's like 5 in the morning and know. It's like 5 in the morning and they're not they're not even awake, you they're not they're not even awake, you they're not they're not even awake, you know, and I think, "Oh, I'm I'm probably know, and I think, "Oh, I'm I'm probably know, and I think, "Oh, I'm I'm probably not I don't know." So, all I do is I not I don't know." So, all I do is I not I don't know." So, all I do is I think, well, it's not it's not a think, well, it's not it's not a think, well, it's not it's not a negotiation that I get in. That's not a negotiation that I get in. That's not a negotiation that I get in. That's not a negotiation. But how long I'm in for, I negotiation. But how long I'm in for, I negotiation. But how long I'm in for, I adapt. Some days I'm in for 30 seconds. adapt. Some days I'm in for 30 seconds. adapt. Some days I'm in for 30 seconds. 30 seconds. I get in, I find the breath 30 seconds. I get in, I find the breath 30 seconds. I get in, I find the breath and think, "Great job out." I'm not even and think, "Great job out." I'm not even and think, "Great job out." I'm not even cooled really in 30 seconds. But it's a

38:00

cooled really in 30 seconds. But it's a cooled really in 30 seconds. But it's a training tool on the nervous system. training tool on the nervous system. training tool on the nervous system. Other days I get in and think, "Oh, Other days I get in and think, "Oh, Other days I get in and think, "Oh, [ __ ] great." What? I just feel it and [ __ ] great." What? I just feel it and [ __ ] great." What? I just feel it and I just lay back and it's bliss. It's I just lay back and it's bliss. It's I just lay back and it's bliss. It's bliss. So I'm I'm in this potent bliss. So I'm I'm in this potent bliss. So I'm I'm in this potent stressor. The cold's like a vice. you stressor. The cold's like a vice. you stressor. The cold's like a vice. you know, there's ice clinking around and know, there's ice clinking around and know, there's ice clinking around and it's just peace and I'm finding my it's just peace and I'm finding my it's just peace and I'm finding my heartbeat in the water and thinking, heartbeat in the water and thinking, heartbeat in the water and thinking, "Oh, I love it. This is what it's for." "Oh, I love it. This is what it's for." "Oh, I love it. This is what it's for." And the the key thing is to go with the And the the key thing is to go with the And the the key thing is to go with the nervous system just as you would. Like nervous system just as you would. Like nervous system just as you would. Like every day is not a 10K, is it? No. But every day is not a 10K, is it? No. But every day is not a 10K, is it? No. But it might be. But it might be. And and it might be. But it might be. And and it might be. But it might be. And and and really that's um it's knowing what and really that's um it's knowing what and really that's um it's knowing what you're aiming for on the big picture. you're aiming for on the big picture. you're aiming for on the big picture. What am I What am I trying to do with What am I What am I trying to do with What am I What am I trying to do with this? What have I got an ice bath for? this? What have I got an ice bath for? this? What have I got an ice bath for? What is it for? So for me it's a a What is it for? So for me it's a a What is it for? So for me it's a a nervous system regulation tool. I didn't nervous system regulation tool. I didn't nervous system regulation tool. I didn't know that. I know that now. Um so that know that. I know that now. Um so that know that. I know that now. Um so that that's what it is for me which means that's what it is for me which means that's what it is for me which means each day I am conscious of the state each day I am conscious of the state each day I am conscious of the state what what is the load on my nervous what what is the load on my nervous what what is the load on my nervous system and I adjust dose. Yeah. And that

39:00

system and I adjust dose. Yeah. And that system and I adjust dose. Yeah. And that means it's never the same isn't it? means it's never the same isn't it? means it's never the same isn't it? That's we do. Yeah. Through nearly That's we do. Yeah. Through nearly That's we do. Yeah. Through nearly passing out in a field you know but it passing out in a field you know but it passing out in a field you know but it took nearly passing out in a field. I took nearly passing out in a field. I took nearly passing out in a field. I didn't know I was overdosing. I was just didn't know I was overdosing. I was just didn't know I was overdosing. I was just of this surely this will be better. of this surely this will be better. of this surely this will be better. But the thing the thing I love most is But the thing the thing I love most is But the thing the thing I love most is and back probably to your you know that and back probably to your you know that and back probably to your you know that provocation of male mental health. It's provocation of male mental health. It's provocation of male mental health. It's finding the bliss in the stress. Yeah. finding the bliss in the stress. Yeah. finding the bliss in the stress. Yeah. That is it. That's the single idea which That is it. That's the single idea which That is it. That's the single idea which is why the logo is as it is. You know we is why the logo is as it is. You know we is why the logo is as it is. You know we have the we we've got the monkey with have the we we've got the monkey with have the we we've got the monkey with the closed eyes and and it's inside a the closed eyes and and it's inside a the closed eyes and and it's inside a snowflake. It's actually also it's a snowflake. It's actually also it's a snowflake. It's actually also it's a it's gripped by a stressor. So the it's gripped by a stressor. So the it's gripped by a stressor. So the monkeyy's calm as it's being crushed. I monkeyy's calm as it's being crushed. I monkeyy's calm as it's being crushed. I love your logo. I love your logo. I do. love your logo. I love your logo. I do. love your logo. I love your logo. I do. Yeah. So that so that crushing that that Yeah. So that so that crushing that that Yeah. So that so that crushing that that crushed monkey is just blissed out crushed monkey is just blissed out crushed monkey is just blissed out because it's not a problem. Yeah. And because it's not a problem. Yeah. And because it's not a problem. Yeah. And that that was it. That that that's that that was it. That that that's that that was it. That that that's that's the goal that that for me is that's the goal that that for me is that's the goal that that for me is great. It's a great brand. It is a great great. It's a great brand. From Breathwork to Cold: The Eustress Principle

The breathwork became a quiet, consistent anchor. Dan wasn't approaching it as mysticism or as the next wellness trend; he was using it the way he'd later understand it — as a deliberate practice that created a pause where there had been none. What Wim Hof had done was take tummo breathing — a technique rooted in Tibetan tradition, practiced for centuries — and repackage it in language accessible to anyone willing to try. The genius wasn't the method itself; it was the accessibility.

At the heart of both breathwork and cold water lies hormesis: the principle that certain stressors, applied at the right dose, make the system stronger and more resilient. Cold exposure, sauna, exercise, intermittent fasting, breathwork — each is a form of eustress, a deliberate positive stress the body adapts to, provided the dose stays below the threshold of harm. At the right measure, these practices deepen recovery and recalibrate the stress response toward greater equilibrium. At high dose, any of them can damage what they were meant to strengthen.

Breathwork opened the door. Cold showers followed through 2019, uncomfortable at first, then routine, then something he looked forward to. Group lake immersions came next — the communal ritual of entering cold open water together, the shared deliberateness of it, the particular quality of mental clarity that cold exposure reliably delivers. Cold triggers a surge in norepinephrine, the catecholamine that sharpens focus and lifts mood with a precision few other practices can match. That clarity, experienced once, becomes a reference point.

I could find calm in the stress and that translated into life.

The progression culminated in an expedition to Poland with Wim Hof himself. Mount Schneeska, minus twenty degrees, cross winds, wearing only shorts and boots. Standing on that mountain, something shifted from intellectual to embodied — an understanding felt rather than reasoned, of what Wim Hof had been saying all along. The body adapts to challenge, not through force or denial, but through deliberate, progressive exposure to the right difficulty at the right dose. The cold was never punishment; it was a protocol.

He returned from Poland and trained as a certified Wim Hof method instructor. The business idea hadn't formed yet — just a deepening conviction that this practice held real value, that the transformation it produced was worth taking seriously. Cold had moved from something that sounded horrific to something that felt essential. What to build around that conviction was still coming into focus; the direction, though, was unmistakable.

The instructor training deepened the understanding further. Wim Hof's method isn't primarily about cold; it centers on mindset — the recognition that you are capable of more than your comfort zone suggests, and that deliberate challenge is the means through which that capacity is revealed. The breathwork, the cold, the mountains in winter: each is a different expression of the same principle. Once you internalize it, that principle changes how you relate to difficulty everywhere else in your life.

The Chest Freezer and the Moment of Clarity

When the agency was eventually sold, Dan exited as quickly as he could. The acquisition, the subsequent sale to yet another company, the prospect of operating inside a structure someone else had built — none of it suited him. The exit should have felt like release; instead it arrived with something he hadn't anticipated: a quiet drift, sharpened by lockdown and the strange suspended atmosphere of those months. He found himself wondering whether he had built what he'd set out to build — not a crisis, exactly, but a hollow note beneath the surface.

He siliconed the seams of a chest freezer, filled it with cold water, placed a thermometer at the edge, and watched it settle toward 0 degrees. Ice formed at the surface. His wife was not impressed; lockdown restrictions meant weekly grocery limits, and the household freezer she had been relying on was now serving a different purpose entirely. The setup was rudimentary, and none of it resembled the group lake swims or the expedition to Poland. This was simply a man alone in a makeshift ice bath in a quiet house, trying to find a way forward.

The contrast with natural immersion was immediate. Cold water in nature offers something no controlled environment can fully replicate — the grounding of wild water, the sensory richness of sunlight on skin, the communal energy of entering something vast together. This had none of that. There was no shared experience to carry him through the initial shock, no beauty to anchor his attention, no ceremony. Just the cold, the silence, and whatever he brought in with him.

The solitude changed the quality of the experience. Group immersions carry their own power — the shared commitment, the collective energy moving through discomfort together — but they also provide a buffer. Alone in a garage, there was none. There was only the choice to get in or not; to stay present or not. That starkness, it turned out, was its own clarity.

What he brought in was doubt — the weight of a career that hadn't quite resolved into what he'd imagined, the low-grade anxiety of an unwritten next chapter. He lowered himself into the freezing water carrying all of it. And when he came out, something had shifted: the fog had cleared, the noise had gone. He felt, for the first time in longer than he could easily name, like himself again.

The fog had cleared, the noise had gone. I felt like me again.

That moment became the founding philosophy of Brass Monkeys: when we're challenged, we're changed. Cold water, applied with deliberate intention at the right temperature and duration, resets the nervous system — cortisol recalibrates, the sympathetic stress response yields to parasympathetic recovery, and with it comes a clarity of mind that chronic stress can entirely obscure. That post-immersion state — fog cleared, noise gone, a return to yourself — became the product promise. The chest freezer in that lockdown garage wasn't a business idea yet. It was proof that cold, used as a deliberate tool rather than an occasional event, could return a person to themselves.

Wild Water versus Controlled Cold

Nothing in cold water therapy quite replicates the experience of natural immersion. Wild water carries a particular quality of presence — the temperature of a lake, the light on the surface, the texture of ground beneath your feet, the exposure to something vast and indifferent that no controlled environment can fully contain. When conditions align, entering cold open water outdoors produces a grounding effect that reaches deeper than the physiological response alone. It is an experience worth seeking, whenever seeking it is genuinely possible.

But wild swimming carries genuine trade-offs. The safety risk is real; cold open water can turn quickly, and the conditions that make it transformative are the same conditions that demand respect and careful preparation. There are practical costs, too: the travel, the changing, the walk home frozen, the unpredictability of what you'll find when you arrive. Breaking ice at Hampstead Heath ponds in January, then rewarming slowly on the walk back — extraordinary, yes; repeatable as a daily practice, no.

A controlled ice bath fills that gap with precision. When the temperature is exact, the environment is private, and the session takes five minutes rather than an hour of logistics, the practice transforms from an event into a ritual. Cold exposure releases norepinephrine, supporting alertness, mood, and recovery from the inflammation that accumulates in any active life. Consistency is what amplifies those benefits over time — and consistency requires removing the friction that stands between intention and action.

Brass Monkeys grew from that recognition. The prototype chest freezer became a commercial product because the gap it addressed was genuine: people who understood the value of cold immersion but couldn't realistically build it into the rhythm of daily life. The arc from wild lake swim to lockdown garage to commercial units shipping globally follows a single through-line — cold as a precise, deliberate tool rather than an occasional event. That reframe changes what the practice can sustain, and what it can do for you over time.

The Brass Monkeys units now appear in saunas, studios, and recovery spaces around the world — but the founding intention remains unchanged. Dan Bosomworth built the company because he needed what he was building: a reliable, repeatable way to access the clarity that cold water produces. When cold becomes a daily practice rather than an occasional ordeal, it stops being something you do and becomes part of how you function. That is what the chest freezer in the garage, for all its improvisation, pointed toward.
